Retail giant Walmart is known for their low prices, 24/7 operating hours, and… employee abuse? Despite the company’s popularity with consumers, the employees seem to be anything but happy! We’ve put together a list of the craziest confessions Walmart employees have to offer. They range from the sad to the illegal to the bizarre. They all bring up important realities in working life, though, even if they are somewhat unsettling!
Without further ado, check out the deepest, darkest secrets of Walmart employees. They just might make you think twice before spending your next paycheck at the store, though!
“Walmart treats its employees like slaves. We hardly get paid over minimum wage and we have to put up with customer harassment until it gets violent. I have to have a strict budget.”
Nearly everyone who has worked in retail has some kind of customer horror story. Walmart employees, however, claim that their experiences are worse than those of many others! We can’t speak to the validity of this claim, but we CAN say that it seems like employee satisfaction at the big box store is less than ideal!
Kind and Generous
“I work at Walmart. A family came through my line and couldn’t afford their groceries. The mom looked so sad, so I slide my debit card for them and paid half of it. I got yelled at by management.”
Aww! This is really sweet! It’s a shame that this kind Walmart employee was discouraged from helping out a struggling customer. We think that the world would be a much nicer place if more people did nice things like this every day. Get it together, Walmart! We’ll respect you a lot more once you do!
“I got fired yesterday. The reason? I called out sick the day before. Thanks, Walmart.”
We’re sure that there’s more to this story than what’s given here, but it still seems pretty darn shady. We can’t figure out why you would fire someone for getting sick. Our best guess is that this employee had taken LOTS of sick days before this particular incident.
Customers of Walmart Are Legendary
More than likely, you’ve come across a photo or two of crazy customers at Walmart. Considering how many locations they have across the nation, and the extremely wide range of products they offer, you can postulate that there would be a crazy customer or two. But the level of crazy is far beyond, when it comes to these customers that Walmart employees see while working on the job.
Customers Who Wear Almost Anything
Imagine restocking products on a shelf, when someone dressed in the tightest clothes possible comes cruising down the aisle. Oh, my. Walmart workers must have a tough time remaining professional, working next to customers with insane outfits like these. It must have taken some work getting into those clothes.
Trying Not to Stare at Sexy Customers
At the average workplace, with sexual harassment seminars and such, it’s understandable for employees to get written up by their managers for staring at female customers or ogling over their beauty or figure. At Walmart, in this case, you can hardly blame the guy. This female shopper is apparently picking up a forgotten item at the local Walmart before surprising her lover with a sexy and revealing outfit. She just made that Walmart worker’s day.
Dealing with Customers Who Act Like Children
One of the duties of Walmart employees is to gather the carts and electric wheelchairs from the parking lot and around the store. Sometimes, they’re broken. And here’s why. Either there was only one chair left, or these two wanted to share. Either way, it’s not good for the electric wheelchair. Imagine being the employee that has to tell the grown woman to get off the back of the seat.
Helping Customers Without Cracking Up Laughing
If you work at Walmart, your main job is customer service. As anyone who has worked in customer service knows, it can be a tough job, depending on the customers that you are dealing with. Here’s an example of a Walmart customer looking to buy some perfume, probably a scent that matches his tiny, tight dress. Now how is a Walmart employee expected to help this gentleman without busting up laughing? Acting professionally can be tough!
Beyonce Gives Generously While Shopping at Walmart
Even Queen Bey shops at Walmart, proving that although she is one of the most successful artists and performers in the world, Beyonce is still humble. While she was at Walmart, at a location in Tewksbury, Massachusetts Beyonce asked to use the store’s intercom at checkout, and delighted shoppers with an announcement, ““Hello, Walmart shoppers. Testing Walmart shoppers–it’s Beyonce! I stopped by the store today because my record just arrived to give everyone a little gift. For everyone in the store right now, the first $50 of your holiday gifts are on me. Merry, merry Christmas.” She made good on her promise, giving away $37,500 to shoppers that day.
Walmart, founded in 1962, is one of the largest superstore-based retail outlets in the world. With thousands of stores across the globe, it is estimated that the owners of the company (The Walton Family) have a combined net worth of over $150 billion. Needless to say, they’re financially successful! Are they successful from an HR standpoint, though? Keep reading to find out…
Not So Nice
“Working in retail has made me despise people. When I say ‘Have a good day’ I really mean I want to punch you in the throat.”
Starting us off is this not so nice confession! Apparently, working for Walmart is incredibly stressful and sometimes leads employees to act in less than decorous ways. We can’t blame them, though. Once you read the rest of these confessions, you’ll understand why they’re so darn angry!
Pregnant and Unemployed
“I worked at Walmart for a month until they fired me for being pregnant and my boyfriend too for making sure I was okay. We haven’t set foot in one since.”
Umm… we’re pretty sure this is illegal. Then again, so are many confessions on this list! It’s definitely NOT cool to fire someone for becoming pregnant. If that’s the standard company practice, it’s no wonder their employees are so unhappy!
Another pregnancy-related confession is coming up on slide 2!
A Sweat Shop
Long hours, poor benefits, and lots of mistreatment… If we’re not mistaken, that sounds a lot like a sweat shop! After all, that’s what this employee compared it to in their confession. That definitely seems like a super harsh comparison, but we’re sure they have their reasons!
“These people protest to be paid $17 an hour. I work for Walmart too and I’d kill for $10.”
The fight for a nationwide $15 minimum wage is incredibly important to Walmart employees! The company has a strict policy of never paying entry-level workers more than minimum wage. This sounds reasonable, but doesn’t work as well in practice.
Slide 3 has more information about this weird conundrum!
Epileptic = Unemployed
“I’m epileptic and pregnant and I got fired from my job at Walmart when I took a break 10 minutes longer than usual because I felt a seizure coming on… I haven’t bought a single thing since then.”
We’re pretty sure this is ALSO illegal. The Americans With Disabilities Act says that employers and schools can’t discriminate against people because of their disability, but this DEFINITELY sounds like discrimination. Someone call the FBI and get them to investigate this! Just kidding… or are we? The world may never know…
“I work at Walmart and don’t snitch on thieves because I hate the Walmart Company. Everyone knows you’re the richest family in the world and you only pay us $8.31/hour.”
The Walton Family is hardly popular with their employees! While they’re living a life of luxury, employees report constantly struggling to make ends meet. If this is really true, things are certainly looking grim for one of America’s richest families. Seems like there’s some trouble in paradise!
Disabled and Mistreated
“I work at Walmart. They told me they won’t move me from my department because of my disability. My disability gets worse because of what department I’m in.”
Another day, another Americans With Disabilities Act violation! Regardless, moving an employee to a department that is better for their health seems like a no brainer. It’s a huge company, though, so it only makes sense that some people are bound to slip through the cracks. It’s unfortunate, but true!
“I work in retail. If I know we don’t have something and I get sent anyways, I go to the back and stand there for three minutes to make it look like I’m looking.”
We’re pretty sure this employee confession isn’t exclusive to Walmart only! After all, everyone loves a little break while they’re on the job. We think it’s pretty clever to use this opportunity to “take a look in the back” and steal a few quiet moments to take a breath and collect your thoughts!
“I’ve been working as a manager for the same retail store for two years. I’ve been stealing merchandise ever since I’ve been able to work by myself.”
Uh oh! It seems like the Walmart corporation isn’t the only one up to some funny business! This employee has been stealing from the store ever since he or she took on a management position! Chances are good that they got caught eventually… or at least we really hope so!
No Social Life
“If you don’t want a social life, working at Walmart is the best job you can get.”
If you work for Walmart, you can forget about needing to spend time on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest! Employees report that the company requires them to work long hours, leaving them no time to develop a social life on or offline! That definitely doesn’t sound fun!
“I got fired from Walmart because I was in the hospital because I have severe depression. And was planning on killing myself.”
What is it with Walmart and ADA violations? Mental illnesses are still legitimate disabilities, so it’s definitely not okay to fire someone for getting sick with one! We can only hope that there’s more to this story… if not, someone should definitely get the authorities to look into this situation!
“I quit my job at Walmart. I was tired of being overworked and under-appreciated by management.”
This is a short and simple confession, but it certainly gets the point across! The general consensus really does seem to be that Walmart expects their employees to work long hours with little pay. But, one could argue that they knew this when they first applied for a job there!
Disabled by Walmart
“I’m 19 and am considered 45% disabled because of Walmart when I was working there and was hurt and they paid the doctor off now I have extreme pain and limited mobility.”
Alright, this confession doesn’t make too much sense. But, if you do some interpretation and translation, it seems to be about a person claiming they were disabled while working in a Walmart. We’re curious to know what the full story is here. We’re sure it’s pretty complicated!
A Living Wage?
“I work at Walmart as a cashier, and I only make $8,000 a year at most. The store manager makes $98,000 a year for walking around and telling people what to do. But where’s my money???”
Here’s yet another confession about pay disparities at Walmart. This definitely seems to be something the employees are passionate about! There’s hope there’s improvement ahead for them, though. This is definitely an issue that is gaining speed with American voters! It’s certain to play a huge role in the years to come.
Bye, Bye Baby
“I’m afraid my job at Walmart will cost me a miscarriage. I’ve been telling them I keep cramping from lifting and they keep brushing it off and passing me to someone else.”
Wow! This is certainly a big claim to make! Still, the incidence of miscarriage in women working in manual labor positions is well documented. Hopefully, this woman was able to carry a happy, healthy baby to term, and then get to take some well-deserved maternity leave! Most people agree that should be the new national standard!
Despite all of these wild confessions, Walmart remains one of the most popular retail companies in the world. We can’t say we understand why, but there’s no denying their success!
