Ever since Trevor Noah took over The Daily Show from John Stewart, he has found himself in some hot water regarding very controversial jokes and posts buried deep in his twitter feed. But has this funnyman’s offensive jokes gone too far?
Trevor Noah Causing A Stir
The offensive jokes that were found in Noah’s past lead many people to ask, is he really joking? His life story will have you wondering. He grew up not being able to walk next to his father because of the color of his skin, and sold pirated CDs for extra cash. Knowing this, you can imagine that Noah has a brash outlook on life. Read on to see the unbelievable things he was caught saying and how his tough childhood might be to blame.
A Bad Start?
Since his controversial tweets made headlines, Noah has attempted to justify his jokes. “You show me half my jokes from even two years ago, three years ago—I hate them. Because you see, like, a young version of yourself. You’re like, ‘Why would you say that? You idiot! That makes no sense.’ Or, ‘That’s just stupid.’ Or, ‘Ahh, I can’t believe I said that about a woman.’ You should not like what you did back then, because that shows that you’ve grown. If you’re still doing it, that’s a scarier place to be.”
So What Exactly Did He Say?
Noah’s comments included calling Olympic women’s hockey “lesbian porn”, saying women’s leagues are never better than men’s, and joking that “fat chicks everywhere” get excited about people getting drunk so that they will be perceived as attractive. His jokes didn’t seem to land with his audience. But why exactly? Read on…
He Constantly Uses These Influences In His Comedy
Even though his childhood was rough and would have torn plenty of other people down, Trevor Noah uses his absent father in his comedy all of the time. This is truly what gives Noah’s comedy and routines an edginess and rawness which other comedians don’t have.
He’s In Hot Water With Women, Too
Before starting a new job, it’s always a good idea to watch what you say on social media. It was no different with Trevor Noah. Shortly after it was announced Trevor Noah would be the host of The Daily Show, many people found his Twitter account to be both “un-American” and obscene.
Part of His Charm?
Trevor Noah is not filtered, like at all. His Twitter comments prove his comedy is slightly off mainstream and pokes fun at his childhood. His jokes are also about how America is VERY different from South Africa and not always in a good way. Read on to see what Noah endured growing up in a country with great political strife.
He’s From South Africa
The host of The Daily Show is actually from Johannesburg, South Africa, which is why he might sound funny to you. The host’s mom is from South Africa, while his Swiss-German father is from Switzerland. This is the main reason why Noah’s childhood life wasn’t all roses and butterflies.
He Endured The Apartheid
Apartheid was a South African system of segregation, which prohibited the commingling or love between different races. This made childhood for Trevor difficult because his parents were an interracial couple. He has stated before that while walking through the streets, his dad would have to wave at him from another corner of the block.
His Dad Is German
Trevor Noah is considered mixed race because his parents are different races. His father is Swiss German. His parent’s relationship was illegal at the time due to apartheid, so Noah didn’t get to know his father during his younger years. Noah’s dad moved back to Switzerland before Noah was a teenager.
Raised By Women
Because he was unable to grow up with both of his parents in one house and his father eventually left South Africa, Noah was primarily raised by his mother and grandmother. In his autobiography, Noah writes, “The fact that I grew up in a world run by women was no accident. Apartheid kept me away from my father because he was white, but for almost all the kids I knew in my grandmother’s neighborhood in Soweto [a South African township], apartheid had taken away their fathers as well, just for different reasons.”
Growing Up In Poverty
Primarily growing up in the impoverished neighborhood his grandmother lived in, Noah and his family weren’t exactly well off. “One month, he says, money was so short that they were forced to subsist on bowls of wild spinach, cooked with mopane worms, ‘the cheapest thing that only the poorest of the poor people eat,'” reports The Guardian on Noah’s book. As a teen, Noah made extra money copying and selling pirated CDs before he and his friends started DJing.
He Was One Successful Teenager
Most of us teenagers are just going through puberty and crushing on our classmates, but when Trevor Noah was a teen, he was taking over the world. During his teenage years, Noah hosted his own educational series Run The Adventure and The Amazing Date.

Before hitting it big in the United States, Trevor Noah starred in the South African soap show, Isindingo, which is extremely popular. This gave him the exposure to begin creating his own content and directly after leaving the soap, Noah started his very own radio show.
His Very Own Tonight Show
South African television itself is a huge deal, and Trevor Noah was the king of it. In 2010, Trevor Noah hosted his own South African night program called, The Tonight Show With Trevor Noah, which was received with critical acclaim. This show launched the young comedian into international fame.
His Mom Had A Hard Life
Trevor Noah’s mother, Patricia, had a very difficult life due to apartheid. Her first real relationship was with Trevor’s father and he eventually left her and Trevor behind. Patricia’s next relationship was with a man named Abel Shingange, Noah’s step-father, who was incredibly abusive. According to Daily Mail, Shingange “beat [Noah’s mother] with old bicycle frames in public and in front of her staff, slapped her, chased her down the street as she fled with their youngest child, and smashed phones and furniture.”
Patricia eventually left Shingange and got engaged to someone else in 2009, but the move almost cost her her life. Noah’s grandmother told Daily Mail, “Shingange tracked [Patricia] down and shot her in the face and back, shattering her jaw, piercing her skull, nose and ear, and leaving her unable to speak properly.” Luckily, Patricia survived the attack, but she had to undergo extensive surgery at a private doctor, where Shingange couldn’t find her.
Trevor Was Threatened
After the attack on his mother, Trevor called her ex-boyfriend to confront him about the attack. The attacker threatened to kill Trevor and kill his entire family, so the comedian decided to escape to Los Angeles. This horrible interaction worked out for Trevor in end, who ended up landing The Daily Show gig after moving to Los Angeles.
He Made History on The Tonight Show
After his own successful stint on South Africa’s Tonight Show, Trevor Noah came to the United States and made some history on the American The Tonight Show. Trevor Noah is the first ever South African comedian to ever perform an open mic routine and stand-up on The Tonight Show.
He Was First a Writer
Before he hosted The Daily Show, he proved his talent as a writer for the TV series. In 2013, Trevor Noah became a regular contributor to The Daily Show, writing skits and appearing in some of the segments. This was just the experience he needed before heading into the spotlight.
He’s the Third Host of the Show

The Ratings Better Pick Up Though

This is because most The Daily Show With Jon Stewart fans would rather watch Full Frontal With Samantha Bee. Samantha Bee stole many writers from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
He’s Not Political
Even though Trevor Noah was directly affected by apartheid and the politics of South Africa, he is not involved in politics at all. Trevor describes himself as being a “progressive person,” but he is quite adamant about not detailing his political affiliation in the United States. He is quite clearly against Donald Trump though.

His Stand-Up Is On Point
Trevor Noah’s first real stand-up special is called Trevor Noah: African American. The stand-up is based solely on what it’s like to be an African in America, not an African American. The movie is incredibly poignant but is also chock full of Trevor’s comedy.

Comedy Central Backs Him Up, Though

The station says, “Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included… To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
His Comedy Is SO Different from Jon Stewart’s
Comedy is completely subjective to the comedian, which is why Trevor’s comedy is SO different from Jon Stewart’s. Stewart’s comedy and jokes are more tongue-in-cheek, while Trevor Noah is a little bit angrier. Trevor Noah’s main joke is always a joke about Trump, while Stewart used to joke about Obama.
He Knows Nothing About American Politics
Even though Trevor Noah hosts a show which is only about American politics, Trevor Noah says he knows absolutely nothing about American politics. Noah states because he is from South Africa, he simply doesn’t want to get involved by stating his own opinion.

He’s Most Popular In Australia
Even though Trevor is from South Africa and has a television show in the United States, most of his fans are based in Australia. Trevor Noah’s tour has sold out shows in the Sydney Opera house.
Where He’s Not The Most Popular
Trevor Noah isn’t afraid of saying what he feels, which is why he definitely has some haters. Critics of Trevor Noah say that he isn’t qualified to host The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, because he hasn’t been in the country for that long and that he isn’t even a citizen. Others call these critics close-minded, and even racist.
Tomi Lahren HATES Him

His Feud With Fellow Comedian Samantha Bee
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee is a super successful late night show on TBS which stars Daily Show alumni Samantha Bee. Many viewers were upset when she wasn’t offered the position of host after Jon Stewart announced his retirement. The Reason Behind The Book Is Great
Trevor Noah decided to write a book because he just couldn’t find anything great to read on the shelves. The comedian stated, “I couldn’t find a good book about myself so I decided to write one. And just like me, this book doesn’t have an appendix.”
Catch Him On Netflix
In February 2017, Netflix premiered Trevor Noah’s latest standup special, Trevor Noah: Afraid of the Dark. The Netflix Original release is part of their efforts to bring more standup routines to the streaming service, as many up and coming comics turn to Netflix to get their material out there, as opposed to being aired on television. Netflix teases Noah’s new special saying, “The Daily Show host ponders the perils of naming countries, how traffic lights turn New Yorkers invincible and why you shouldn’t drink in Scotland.” Of course, you can expect that Noah’s wise cracks are politically charged and thought-provoking from his classic outsider’s perspective.
