Ted attended the prestigious boarding school McCallie in Chattanooga, Tennessee in the 1950s. One of his favorite courses was military training. When he graduated, he hoped to enlist in the U.S. Naval Academy, but his father had other plans for him. He encouraged his son to apply to Harvard University.

Unfortunately, Ted’s grades weren’t up to par for the prestigious university, so he applied to and was accepted to Brown University in Rhode Island. 1959 was a difficult year for Ted. His parents divorced, and he was expelled from Brown because he was caught with a woman in his dorm room.
