Sasha and Malia Obama have transformed from kids into beautiful young women before our very eyes. A lot can happen in two presidential terms. These two girls grew into fashion icons as they matured in the public eye.
These “first kids” are still inspiring us with their style even though their dad isn’t the president anymore. Let’s take a look back at some of the greatest moments in sister style.
Back To The Beginning
The first time we met Sasha and Malia, they were just seven and ten years old. Sasha became the youngest child to live in the White House since John F. Kennedy arrived there as an infant in 1961.
These girls didn’t know it yet, but their lives were about to change forever.
The Democratic National Convention
In 2008, The future first family attended the democratic national convention. They all wore magenta and they all looked absolutely stunning.
This was really Sasha and Malia’s first time in the public eye, and they certainly handled themselves with grace.
This family of four was living the American dream. After the election, these girls had to grow up pretty fast.
They were about to move out of their home and into the White House and become world famous for the first time. Do they look ready for all of that?
The Obama sisters wore wool coats from J. Crew on Inauguration Day in January 2009. These coats were custom made for the Obama girls, and after the inauguration, J. Crew stocks jumped ten percent.
The J. Crew website temporarily crashed from all of the new traffic.
A Vision In Wool
Those wool coats on inauguration day were absolutely adorable, but I have to say, I like these ones better. There’s something about a cream coat that just looks so wintery and coy.
I prefer them in these neutral colors, but to each their own, I guess.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
Michelle Obama is one stylish lady. When the Obama sisters were younger, they dressed a lot like their mother (probably because Michelle dressed them). Nowadays, they’re all grown up and they’re expressing their personal styles in their own ways.
Sometimes it’s nice to remember the old days, though— when things were simpler and less hectic.
This is the first time the public was introduced to Bo, the Obama family’s Portuguese Water Dog. These dogs are super friendly and loyal, and Bo made an excellent “first dog.”
Sasha and Malia look so happy here. You’d be happy too if you just got a new puppy.
There are some perks that go along with being America’s first kids. You get to do a lot of traveling.
Sasha and Malia represented the red, white, and blue their own way when they met with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at Palacio do Alvorada in March 2011.
Looking Their Best
When Obama became president, Sasha and Malia became public figures. Everyone was interested in what they were wearing and what they were doing. That’s a lot of pressure for two little girls.
Sasha and Malia handled it all with grace. They must have really good parents.
Their Sunday Best
This photo was taken nearly two years into Obama’s first term. Sasha was nine and Malia was 12, and they both looked elegant on this Sunday afternoon.
They visited St. John’s Episcopal Church, known as the “Church of the Presidents,” wearing their Sunday best on September 19, 2010.
Because Sasha and Malia became famous while they were young, they had to go through puberty in the public eye. In this photo, Malia is rocking some silver braces.
Good thing orthodontics are only temporary. A lot of us have worn braces at some point in our lives, but Malia is pulling them off better than I ever could.
Christmas In Washington
I am obsessed with Malia’s yellow shirt in this picture. Those bell sleeves are amazing. I normally don’t think of yellow as a Christmas color, but I may just have to wear something similar to my Christmas party this year.
Sasha looks absolutely lovely in lavender.
The Democratic National Convention (Take Two)
How did four years go by so quickly? These two have grown up so much since the first time their father ran in a presidential election.
They look so poised and sophisticated here. Out with the magenta and in with a gorgeous blue dress from H&M and a gingham dress paired with a studded yellow belt from Anthropologie.
Inauguration Day (Take Two)
Malia and Sasha may have grown up, but they haven’t ditched their wool coats. These two look amazing in different shades of purple. Malia wore J.Crew while Sasha opted for Kate Spade.
They looked pretty mature, but that selfie moment reminded us all that they were definitely still kids.
Totally In Demand
Do you like that unicorn sweater Sasha is wearing in this photo? Well, so did everybody else. She wore this $18 sweater from ASOS to a basketball game and it was sold out in a matter of minutes.
Fans even contacted the online retailer to demand that they restock the item.
Red is a significant color in China, which may be why Sasha and Malia chose to wear red on a trip to China to visit President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan.
The New York Daily News called Malia’s $112 two-tiered floral pattern from Topshop “the frock heard round the world.” It sold out of stores soon after this photo was published.
A Vision In Velvet
Velvet is such a classic Christmas fabric. Sasha and Malia are both rocking velvet dresses in this picture. Check out Malia’s floral tights, though.
Where did she get those? I know this picture is from years ago, but I would rock those tights this winter if I could find them.
Lighting The Tree
It gets a little chilly in Washington around Christmas time, but that didn’t stop Sasha and Malia from being fashionable. The Obama sisters proved that you can keep warm and look great at the same time.
I love that they’re rocking different shades of orange. It’s such a bold color.
You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile
Sasha and Malia look great in whatever they wear, but they look best when they’re smiling from ear to ear. These girls haven’t had it easy— their childhood has been anything but ordinary.
They’ve been able to maintain a positive attitude through it all, which is really quite impressive.
Arriving In Italy
The Obama ladies did a lot of traveling in the summer of 2015. They arrived in Milan, Italy in June and they all arrived in style. Sasha and Malia both opted for effortless sundresses. Sasha wore seersucker while Malia wore a simple grey heathered dress.
Michelle stands out in a bold patterned skirt.
It seems like these girls are always going or leaving somewhere. I wonder if they plan their outfits in advance so they all complement each other.
I think Sasha’s dress is my favorite in this picture, although Malia’s totally suits her long, lean figure. Michelle is back at it again with the bold colors and prints.
Winter In The City
Cold weather is no excuse for being unfashionable. Look at Sasha’s panda sweater! Have you ever seen anything that adorable in sweater form?
Wool coats seem to be a theme for these girls. I think I’m going to have to invest in a nice wool coat…
Lending A Helping Hand
These girls are giving back to their community by donating food to people in need. Now we can properly see what was under those gorgeous wool coats.
I think I love the panda sweater even more now, and Malia’s pink, purple, and blue sweater looks very sensible.
A Neutral Affair
Neutral colors don’t have to be boring. The whole Obama family is wearing neutrals in this photo and they all look absolutely stunning. I like how they’re all playing with texture and shine.
I kind of want Malia’s sweater, and I love that Michelle and Malia are kind of wearing matching skirts.
The Dogs Are Growing Up Too
The Obamas loved Bo so much that they decided to get another Portuguese Water Dog. Bo’s little brother’s name is Sunny, and he’s quite the stylish pup.
The Obama sisters look great in this picture. I am obsessed with Sasha’s metallic high heeled boots.
This picture is making me feel all warm and cozy. I want Sasha’s socks and Malia’s scarf and puffy coat.
It must have been pretty cold that day, but the whole Obama family is smiling. Except for Barack. I don’t really know what he’s doing with his mouth.
They Look Like Twins
I know we’ve seen Sasha and Malia in these outfits already, but we didn’t see Sasha’s entire burgundy dress. Sasha looks exactly like her mom and Malia looks exactly like her dad. Genetics are crazy.
The whole family looks beautiful, as always. Remember when the president looked like this?
Sophistication At The State Dinner
In March 2016, Malia and Sasha Obama attended their first state dinner at the White House. Each of their embroidered Naeem Khan gowns was worth nearly $20,000.
President Obama grew emotional while discussing his daughters at the event. “When I first elected to this office, Malia was just 10 and Sasha was 7,” he said. “And they grow up too fast. Now Malia is going off to college…and I’m starting to choke up.”
A Thanksgiving Tradition
Both Sasha and Malia look super trendy in this photo. They’re both wearing items from American Apparel, and they both look way too cool. They’ve come a long way since their dad was first elected president.
Sasha’s glasses definitely suit her and Malia’s two-tone jacket looks super posh.
All Grown Up
Now that Barack Obama isn’t the president anymore, Sasha and Malia have more freedom to wear what they want. Sasha was spotted on the beach wearing this revealing bathing suit, and Malia has been experimenting with her style at Harvard where she’s attending university.
These girls still have a lot of growing up to do, but we’re confident they’re going to grow up into full-fledged fashionistas.
