Being a single mom is one of the toughest jobs in the world. You have to play both mom and dad for your kids and act as their sole support system. Many men find it hard to be a single father, but mothers are out there getting the job done on their own.
Famous Single Moms Of Hollywood
In Hollywood, there is a short list of women who play the role of single parent, but they play the role well. Some of them chose to lead this life while others were forced to be both parents. No matter the case, you still have to respect what they have to do because it is not that simple.
Mary Louise Parker
When Mary Louise Parker decided to adopt her daughter Ash back in 2007 she said, “I finally just decided, ‘OK, I’m going to do this, and it’s going to be really hard because I’m single, and I’m going to do it anyway.” She knew the road ahead was going to be tough but she committed to it anyway.
You may know Parker from Showtime’s TV show Weeds, for which she got a Golden Globe Award. She is also from the series The West Wing. At 52 years old, she has embraced being a single parent and appears to be doing a great job.
Kristin Davis went the adoption route. She said, “it is terrifying, partly because with adoption you always know there’s the chance that it won’t work.” She boldly conquered the fear and has been doing so since 2012. It is great to have two parents but if one can handle it on their own why not give it shot?
Davis is known quite well as Charlotte from Sex and the City. That role scored her an Emmy Award nomination. She has also tried her hand at Broadway in a few plays such as The Best Man, playing Mabel Cantwell.
Minnie Driver gave birth to her son back in 2008 but did not spill the beans on who the father was until late 2012. In an interview, Driver said that the father knew of the child but said he “hasn’t been that involved.” That classifies you as a single mother in this case.
The 46-year old star from Good Will Hunting has been in a high count of films but that is the one she is probably most known from. She made some TV appearances in some high profile shows like Will & Grace and The X-Files, to name a few.
Taraji P. Henson
The Empire star has come a long way in life and had to work extra hard since college, being a single mother. She was with her high school sweetheart until he tragically died in a car accident, leaving Henson to single motherhood. She left college and went to Hollywood to pursue her dreams of acting. She got her big break with her role in Baby Boy.
A lot of her hard work she gives credit to her son. “My father said, ‘That’s your baby. That’s your blessing. He’s going to be your strength.'” And she knows that is exactly what he is.
Being a single parent is worth it to Sofia Vergara. “I raised him trying to set the best example and give him the best that I could,” she said. “When people compliment me on him, on how well mannered, how charming, funny and well-behaved he is, it makes all the sacrifices worthwhile.”
That is an admirable way to look at parenting alone and how many should look at it. In the years 2012, 2013 and 2016 she earned the most out of all the actresses on US television. Quite a feat and another thing she can be proud of.
Her milkshake brought all the boys to the yard. And she was also really bossy. Kelis talked about how it was being a single working parent mentioning “it’s hard being a working, single mother,” she said. “But on the flip side, it’s awesome, too.” She said she does get help from her father and her former husband, Nas.
She rose to universal prominence in 2003 when she came out with smash single “Milkshake”. She filed for divorce with Nas when she was seven months pregnant. The two were married for four years, from 2005 to 2009. Irreconcilable differences were the reason for the breakup.
Michelle Williams is another single parent who finds it tough doing what she does. “You make it work,” Williams told USA Today of single motherhood. “You keep getting out of bed. Sometimes it’s just because you know there’s a cup of coffee downstairs.” Anything to get the job done even if that means simply looking forward to a cup of coffee.
Williams was married to the late Heath Ledger and it was not until his 2008 death when her life changed. The Dawson’s Creek actor has done a great job at raising her daughter Matilda by herself. Ledger would of a been a proud father.
Katie Couric has a perspective that other single parents may be able to relate to closely. “You don’t have the bad cop when you’re the good cop and you don’t have a good cop when you’re the bad cop, you’re like the whole police force in your family… and so it’s challenging,” she said.
The news anchor still instills some of the values she and her husband shared. He passed away back in 1998 so it has been some years she has been on this journey by herself. she just believes not having that second person to work with is the hardest part.
People get the impression that Kate Moss is a cold person. Her daughter begs to differ. “Like every mom, she’s embarrassing and annoying,” Kate Moss’s daughter told The Daily Mail. “But you love them really.” No matter if you are single or in a relationship it seems that you will always be deemed as embarrassing to your little children.
The 42-year old model was discovered early at the age of 14. She has been several relationships since early 2000, but none have really been consistent. She was once ranked the 99th richest woman in Britain and the top 15 on the list of models.
This single mom has been one for quite some time but may be looking to put an end to that. Her schedule is not as busy anymore with filming so she feels now would be a great time to go out and stop being single. “My daughter is older and it feels like there is more energy right now to be available,” she said. “So it will probably happen.”
The Desperate Housewives actress and Golden Globe winner is 52 and feels she needs someone to share her life with now. A little help with her daughter every now and then couldn’t hurt.
Diane Keaton is one who wants her children to have a fatherly figure in their lives. And that is not a bad thing at all. Doing it by yourself doesn’t prove you are strong, sometimes it just isn’t in your cards to be in a relationship. “I told myself I wanted to, but I didn’t really want a man that I could have,” she said. “I wanted the dream.”
The Godfather actress is 70 but it seems like she has accepted the single parent role is just going to keep rolling with it. Her two kids have probably adjusted too.
Solange Knowles was a single parent for seven years before getting married again in 2014. She shared her son with her high school sweetheart for three years before getting a divorce. How much of a sweetheart do you have to be before you guys give up on each other? Not a serious question, but honestly if anyone was capable of single parenting it’s the woman who attacked Jay Z in an elevator.
Following in the footsteps of her big sister with music, she also followed by having a child but way before her big sis did. Solange just released her latest album, “A Seat at the Table”
The never aging Nia Long is the mother of two sons and carries the load with a great attitude. “I’m not a movie star mom who’s got a private chef, a nanny and a driver,” she said to Essence magazine. “My mantra is, ‘You created this, you can handle it.’”
Long entered our lives way back in the day as she co-starred in Friday and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with Will Smith. She could be part vampire because it looks like she barely ages over time, but it could be her sons that keep her young.
Another celebrity who opted to adopt, Sandra Bullock has no regrets about her decision to enter parenthood on her own. “I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time,” she told People in December 2015. Sounds like she is very pleased with the situation she is in.
You probably know her most from her Golden Globe performance in the film The Blind Side back in 2009, but she has been in countless other films. Bullock has a total of two children that she adopted, one a girl and the other a boy.
The actress and model January Jones was excited when she found out she was going to be a parent even if she was single. “I knew I would be raising my son alone,” she told The Edit. “It was something I went in to knowingly, I was prepared mentally — and I was excited about it.”
January Jones played Betty Draper in the TV show Mad Men from 2007 to 2015. That might be what she is most known for. Her most recent roles were in films like X-Men and the Fox series The Last Man on Earth.
Here we have the Top Chef host who wouldn’t have it any other way when it comes to being a single parent. Imagine being told you couldn’t do something but then it happens. “It’s the only way of life I’ve known,” Padma Lakshmi told The Daily News. “I was raised by a single mom. I was told I couldn’t have children, so every day I am kissing the sky with happiness about it.”
She admits that her schedule is crazy so she loves the much-needed help she receives from the likes of her nanny and assistant. Keep working hard, Lakshmi.
She has all girls and couldn’t be more proud. Two of her children are from her last marriage with Charlie Sheen and the other she adopted. “Motherhood — it’s changed my whole outlook on life,” she said during an appearance on Oprah’s Where Are They Now. “It’s so wonderful seeing life through their eyes.”
Seeing life through their eyes almost gives you a chance to relive life and do it over, view things from a different perspective and ask yourself what might have you done differently at that age. Clearly, her whole outlook on life has changed so this has been nothing but positive for her.
Back in 2009, Christina Milian was caught up in infatuation with the music producer The Dream. They got married and she got pregnant but by the time the baby was born she was already a single mother. Milian does a lot but her daughter is number one. “As a mom, that’s at the forefront of everything in my mind, so I’m always trying to balance,” she said to Ebony magazine. “Whether it’s bringing Violet to work or the second I am done working, getting home to her.”
The beauty is 35 years old and is a great mother to her child.
Charlize Theron is as beautiful as they come. She has a very funny, yet honest take on how she sees being a single parent to her two children. “People keep saying, ‘You’re a single mom,'” she told the talk show host. “I go, ‘Actually, I’m not. I got two boys helping me out.'”
The two boys she is referring to are her two dogs! Nice joke, Theron. If that were the case then women would go out and get dogs instead of going through the trouble of trying to find a decent man to help raise their children.
