Game of Thrones is sadly coming to an end and fans all over the world will collectively grieve the loss of some of their favorite TV characters once the final episode airs. Since 2011, viewers have met and grown to love the stars on the show like Mother of Dragons and Jon Snow. One of the heavy favorites is Arya Stark, whom Maisie Williams plays.

In the series, Arya is probably the most fierce of them all even with such a small stature. She was the one to deal the final blow to the Night King with a savvy assassin move after defeating a hoard of his minions by herself. That was merely one of her amazing feats, so on TV, she’s a hero and a star. In real life, she’s felt anything but that.

Thanks to social media trolls, Williams struggled with low self-esteem for years once she started the HBO show.

“It’s something I’m really trying to break free from at the moment,” the actress said on Fearne Cotton’s “Happy Place” podcast. “I went through a huge period of my life where I’d tell myself every day that I hated myself.” The sad part is that if a star as big as Williams goes through this, can you imagine how many other young kids feel the same way? Thankfully, the Stark found a way to defeat this battle in real life as she so often does on screen.

“So many of these problems are really linked to things in your past, as soon as you start digging and start asking yourself bigger questions than ‘Why do I hate myself?’ It’s more, ‘Why do you make yourself feel this way?’ The answers to all of these questions really are within you,” she said. Williams hasn’t completely freed herself of this self-loathing issue, but she is actively working on it, so she doesn’t slip back into that “terrifying” frame of mind.
