In 2018, there were 2.62 billion people who used social media across the world. Holy cow, that's a lot of likes and direct messages going around. Statista.com has that number jumping to 3.02 billion by 2021. These numbers don't mean much if you don't know the detriment that social brings. Selena Gomez knows, and she's voiced her opinion.

With the rise of media platforms, everything wrong about the world gets blasted into our consciousness with the click of a button. Conversely, we also get to see the kind things, but more often than not, the bad outweighs the good. There used to be an argument that violent video games corrupt the youth, but now a legitimate argument can be made that sites like Instagram and Twitter are much worse for the kids.

"I think our world is going through a lot," Gomez said at a press conference in the South of France on May 15, 2019. "I would say for my generation, specifically, social media has really been terrible. It does scare me when you see how exposed these young boys and young girls are."

Exposed is the correct word. People younger than 18 don't need to be looking at a police officer choke slam a boy until he's bloodied or watch a woman take off her clothes to gain followers and likes. We need more people in higher platforms like Gomez speaking about this. "They are not aware of the news," Gomez continued. "I think it's dangerous for sure. I don't think people are getting the right information sometimes."

Right now, there is no clear cut solution to what can be done to help prevent the eyes of the youth from watching such obscene things. Parents need to be heavily involved, that's for sure. Do you agree with Gomez?
