There are a ton of incredible movies, gadgets, and fashion trends getting ready to take over the world. From the final season of Game of Thrones to another royal baby being born, the new year has a chance to be the best ever. If you’re ready to get the ball rolling, here’s a list of all the best things to look forward to when the calendar flips to 2019!
Armageddon Won’t Become Reality
A few years ago, NASA detected an asteroid heading towards earth, scheduled for arrival in 2019. Movie fans everywhere knew this plot too well from the movie Armageddon. The only hope was going to be a rag tag group of oil drillers with personal problems and no space training.
Since the news broke, NASA has confirmed that there is an infinitesimal chance the asteroid crashes down on our planet. What’s actually going to happen is it’s going to pass by, staying at a safe distance of about 2.6 million miles.
Big Farewell Tours
A lot of iconic musicians are calling it quits in 2019. The two biggest are KISS and Elton John. Both made major announcements so their fans would know that this would be the last hurrah. For KISS, its the “One Last Kiss” tour while John has named his tour, “Farewell, Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour.”
Elton John’s tour actually began in September 2018, but the bulk of his 300-show swan song will be taking place after the clock strikes midnight. After 2019 ends, John will wrap up the tour in the United Kingdom, finally hanging up his glasses on December 16, 2020.
Another Handmaid’s Tale
The Handmaid’s Tale is a wild success streaming on Hulu. It’s become so popular that you might realize it was actually based a book originally published in 1985. The author, Margaret Atwood, announced at the end of 2018 that a sequel, The Testaments, will come out next year.
The new book will take place 15 years after the events of the original. It will not follow the same trajectory as the show but it was partially inspired by its success. Atwood said she was mostly inspired by “the world we’ve been living in.”
Game Of Thrones Ends After Eight Seasons
It finally happened, Winter came to Westeros. Now all that’s left to do is watch the horror unfold. After eight seasons, Game of Thrones will premiere its final episodes. The first of many will be in April, teasing fans with all the blood, guts, and heartbreak that awaits for them in the finale.
The only thing we don’t know about Game of Thrones is if George R.R. Martin will surprise fans with a new book in the saga. He’s been working on the sixth installment for years!
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Opens
Disney theme parks have been teasing the opening of “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge” for a few years now. In the fall of 2019, the new space-themed lands will finally open in Disneyland and Disney World. Once open, fans will no longer have to dream about piloting the Millennium Falcon.
At both parks, visitors will be able to explore Batuu, a planet described as full of “rogue traders, droid, and strange creatures.” Star Wars-themed food will also be available. How many parsecs will you drive to get there?
Speaking of Disney, What’s Marvel Up To?
Disney doesn’t just have big theme park plans in 2019. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will also see major changes. Avengers: Endgame comes out in April, and will wrap up the emotional devastation left by Infinity War. Hopefully there’s happy ending!
Of course, before we can reach the endgame, Marvel is taking us back in time with Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson. Set in 1995, the film will introduce the most powerful superhero in the Marvel universe, and hopefully, explain where she was hiding during Infinity War.
Fortnite Takes Center Stage
If you haven’t downloaded and begun playing Fortnite, 2019 is the year. The massively popular game will be holding a tournament with a grand prize of $100 million. The best part is the tournament is open to everyone. All you have to do is learn the basics and hope you qualify!
Being billed by Epic Games as the Fortnite World Cup, the big showdown has already started with qualifying rounds, which will continue for most of 2019. Then, near the end of the year, the big showdown is set to take place, with someone taking home enough money to never have to work again.
Public Domain Stakes A Claim
Talking about public domain should be more exciting. In a world where so much entertainment is pirated, public domain been lost in the shuffle. No more in 2019! For the first time in 20 years, a slew of new books, movies, music, and other thing will enter the public domain.
For those who don’t know, public domain means that anyone and everyone has access to works and the ability to edit and market them as they see fit. The biggest things entering the public domain in 2019 are certain Aldous Huxley novels and Charlie Chaplin films.
The Women’s World Cup
The United States Men’s National team might not be the most dominant soccer team in the world, but the women’s team is the best. In July, the American Outlaws will battle to defend their title at the Women’s World Cup in France.
Since the women’s version of the tournament began in 1991, the US women have taken the crown three times. Their performances have always been iconic; from Brandi Chastain in 1999 to Carli Lloyd in 2015, the USWNT is always must-see television.
Royal Baby MADNESS
If you thought 2018 was a big year for the royal family, then get ready for 2019. There’s no big wedding happening, just a baby being born. The family hasn’t revealed too many details, like the due date or gender, but they have said that Meghan Markle will give birth to her first royal baby.
The news comes just months after she married Prince Harry. Now that she’s settled into life as a duchess, it’s time for the next phase of her life. The introduction of the royal child will surely be lavish and extravagant, and all eyes will be glued to the family when they bring him or her home from the hospital!
Alternative Pain Management Therapies
One of the biggest advances in 2019 could help solve one of the United States’ worst problems; the opioid crisis. The Cleveland Clinic has even gone as far as to label alternative pain management therapies as the most important medical advancement coming.
One of the ways doctors might be able to determine pain medication is through genetic testing. Using the results, they should be able to determine how certain patients will react to different medications, including prescription opioids.
The Year Of 3D Printing
No longer will 3D printing be only for the rich. The technology that makes it possible to build whatever you want will finally be available for you at a reasonable price. So who is responsible for cheap 3D printers for the masses? Xerox, of course!
The printing behemoth is stepping into the 3D arena, embracing the future before becoming a dinosaur stuck in the past. Printing will also help improve the manufacturing and medical field. 3D printing is no longer the future, it’s the here and now.
The Moon Landing Turns 50
There are a few major anniversaries happening in 2019, one of which is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the first mission that put humans on the moon. Led by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the mission was told on the silver screen in 2018 in the movie First Man.
Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. The successful mission ended the Space Race that began in 1961 with President John F. Kennedy’s promise of, “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.”
The Grand Canyon Reaches A Milestone
The Grand Canyon is old. There is no question about that. Just how old it is, however, is another question. In 2019, the American landmark will celebrate its 100th birthday, which is not nearly as old as you might think. This birthday isn’t for the birth of the canyon, though.
One hundred years ago, the Grand Canyon became a national park. To celebrate the occasion, the National Park Service has an entire year of festivities and fun planned for visitors. If you weren’t planning a vacation there yet, 2019 is the perfect time!
Cartoon Classics Will Come To Life
After the success of The Jungle Book, Disney is betting big on live-action remakes of animated classics. The first in line for 2019 is Dumbo, from visionary director Tim Burton. It will be interesting to see how Burton updates the story of the 64-minute original.
Following Dumbo is The Lion King and Aladdin. The latter of which has the star power of Will Smith playing the genie, previously voiced by Robin Williams. Guiding the jungle safari is director Jon Favreau, who directed Iron Man and The Jungle Book previously for the mouse house.
The Periodic Table Will Get Respect
Created by Dmitri Mendeleev, you might barely remember the periodic table of elements from school. Just saying those words may even bring back nightmares if you do. The bad news, then, is that the periodic table is coming back in a big way in 2019.
The United Nations has designated the new year as the “Year of the Periodic Table of Elements.” There’s no better time than now to get over your fears and re-learn one of the most important creations in science history. You never know when someone might ask you what the noble gasses are!
The Statue Of Liberty Museum
In May, a new museum is opening on Ellis Island, and if you read the headline, you know what it’s for. That’s right, once you’re done watching Disney movies and need an emotional break from Game of Thrones, hop on a plane or boat and head to the island and visit the Statue of Liberty museum.
Inside, you’ll find displays on how the statue was made. You’ll also get to see the original torch the statue held up close. We feel patriotic just thinking about it!
A New Men In Black
Men in Black III might not have been as successful as its predecessors, but it made enough money to keep the franchise going. Are you ready for Men in Black International? The fourth movie in the series is a soft reboot, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.
The new movie released a trailer, and the internet reaction was more than positive. Early signs indicate that making Men in Black International was smarter than the proposed Men in Black and 21 Jump Street mash-up, MIB23. And no, that is not a joke.
New Man In Charge In Japan
In April, 83-year-old Emperor Akhito will be stepping down from the throne in Japan. He was the royal ruler of the Asian country for nearly three decades. For many, he’s the only ruler they’ve ever known. History will be made when his replacement takes over.
Crown Prince Naruhito, Akhito’s son, will be taking his father’s place as the new emperor of Japan. He will take over one month after his dad steps away in May. The royal celebration of their new emperor surely will look to rival the celebrations thrown by the world’s most famous royal family.
D-Day Will Be Remembered
Every year, a big deal is made over the anniversary of D-Day. The new year will mark the mission’s 75th anniversary, making it seem bigger than ever before. To help mark the anniversary of the powerful day, Europe will hold ceremonies and other respectful events all year round.
If you want to head to Europe to take in the festivities, you’re in luck; several travel companies are taking the opportunity to offer cheap travel. Some are even putting together special tours to help you take the planning out of your vacation.
