A Sweet Look At Presidents And Their Kids On Prom Night

Going to prom in high school almost feels like a rite of passage for many out there. It’s one of the few moments of your life that will stick with you until the very end. Many U.S. presidents and their offspring have attended prom, and while a vast majority of them rarely post said prom pictures online, there are some that aren’t necessarily ashamed of anything. We take a look at some old prom photos from a historic president, his fashionable wife, and two children, including one that managed to take over the White House for prom.

Barack Obama went to Punahou School, which is a private school in Honolulu, Hawaii, that goes from kindergarten straight through grade 12. For his senior year, Obama, who was the age of 17 at the time, had the time of his life. His old schoolmate Kelli Allman released prom photos to Time magazine back in 2003. During his two terms, the native of Hawaii became the fourth president to get the Nobel Peace Prize and the third to receive it while in office.

Aside from Kelli Allman, Barack Obama attended his senior year prom with his date Megan Hughes, who went to school in Hawaii School for Girls at La Pietra, and fellow basketball player Greg Orme. Nothing says prom night better than a double date, and the four enjoyed one of the finest moments of being a teen.

The two met while working at the Chicago based law firm Sidley Austin; Michelle was assigned to mentor Barack when he was a summer associate. At her high school prom in Whitney M Young High School, Michelle was certainly dressed to impress. Her prom date was David Upchurch, who was her first boyfriend. The two would call it quits after the prom. You wonder whether Upchurch, who is now a customer service representative, regrets ever walking away from her.

The former Alaskan governor ran for Vice President alongside Republican nominee John McCain during the 2008 election, becoming not only the first Alaskan on the national ticket for a major political party, but also the first Republican woman selected as a vice presidential candidate! Sarah Palin attended Wasilla High School through the late ’70s and early ’80s, where she was co-captain and point guard of the girls’ basketball team during her senior year. After high school, Palin became Miss Wasilla before placing third int he Miss Alaska pageant. After that, she became Alaska’s 11th governor!

As the only daughter of former president Gerald Ford, Susan Ford was always protected. Before her dad became president, she was surrounded by security after being targeted by the Symbionese Liberation Army. When her mother Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer, she would serve as the White House hostess.

In 1979, Susan Ford married her father’s former Secret Service agent Charles Vance, but the couple got divorced in 1988. The Washington D.C. native has been married to attorney Vaden Bales since 1989. While she was in high school, she experienced something that never happened in White House history.

Susan Ford is the only President’s daughter to ever have a prom at the White House. The event took place on Saturday, May 31, 1975, and the total cost to run it was $1,300, which was raised at school fairs and bake sales by members of Holton-Arms School.

This special prom at the White House had over 10,000 students from Ford’s high school. In order to attend, classmates would have to disclose their social security numbers, names, and birth dates to the Secret Service. Security back in those days wasn’t as beefed up as it is now.

As one would expect, a prom at the White House was bound to draw some major media attention from every single publication in the world. While her father Gerald Ford was used to the media Susan wasn’t, but she talked to several members of the press along with her prom date that night.

Trying to find a band to perform at the prom was rather difficult at that time. Ford was told that she could get a band that didn’t have any prior drug charges. The Beach Boys were chosen to perform, but they backed out after talks of filming the performance went south. In the end, Sandcastle and The Outerspace Band performed the hits that evening.

The Road To Rocking The White House

For The Outerspace Band, they felt pressure in performing in the White House. The outfit had opened for iconic musician B.B. King, but they were in a different zone altogether at the prom. Sandcastle were used to playing events such as proms and weddings, so they didn’t feel nervous at all. Frontman Billy Etheridge hopped off the stage to dance with Susan Ford for a bit.

The prom was slated to stop at 12:30 a.m., but those in attendance managed to keep the party going until 1 a.m. After the party ended, several people managed to fall asleep inside the bedrooms in the White House, which is a rare feat for anyone to accomplish.

Betty Ford went to the prom with her date Billy Pifer. She was originally set to go with longtime boyfriend Gardner Britt, but they broke up one month before the prom due to a disagreement about the Equal Rights Amendment. Ford would end up dating Pifer for a while after prom.

A week after the monumental prom took place at the White House, President Gerald Ford visited Susan’s high school to address the senior class. Fortunately, he was nowhere near the area when the prom happened. Gerald Ford and Betty Ford were already overseas on a diplomatic tour of Europe.
