The Smothers Brothers, Ahead Of Their Time

The Smothers Brothers were a singing, musician, comedic duo made up of two brothers – Tom and Dick Smothers. During the 1960s they had their own variety show, kind of a precursor to The Sonny and Cher Show without the married part.

Tom always acted like he was the one slow to catch on to the joke, while Dick was the smart one — a real Andy Taylor and Barney Fife type relationship. Tom’s famous line was, “Mom always liked you best!” The brothers were born two years apart in New York to an Army officer and a housewife. Their father was subsequently a captured POW during WWII and later died in the war.
