Movies That Were ‘Based On A True Story’, But Apparently, That Was A Lie

The “true story” tagline might have been overused by Barney Stinson, but it’s a common advertising tool in the filmmaking world. It’s a necessity that’s key for moviegoers who are looking for that realistic touch. This is nothing but a ploy from Hollywood, who tend to sensationalize things and twist the truth harder than M. Night Shyamalan.

However, there are times when history can be a little too dull for people, which is why creative teams come together to sensationalize what really happened. In fact, some movies that are based on a true story are completely made up or sugarcoated for the sake of what really happened. Michael Oher had a totally different story when it came to The Blind Side that really has us questioning what was real or not. What’s really amazing is the fact that filmmakers get away with it.

Philippe Petit’s nail-biting tightrope walk between the two towers of the World Trade Center was very real. He even walked back and forth a few times while performing tricks too. There was even a documentary about Petit’s journey, Man On Wire, but the actual event was never filmed.

Petit claimed in the documentary that he has never fallen during a stunt, which contradict’s the movie’s claim he once fell into a lake while walking. In real life, he did fall during a tightrope rehearsal, but because that was at the circus, it doesn’t count. Director Robert Zemeckis did his homework-Petit’s team did do three trips to New York to prepare. He was arrested for the stunt, but the chargers were dropped as long as he did a free performance at Central Park.
