Food Trends Made Famous By The Stars

Famous people aren’t always paid to endorse things, so when they mention something they love and it isn’t for an advertisement, regular folks are more inclined to believe them. Here are some food crazes and wacky diets that celebrities have made famous.

Khloé’s Cortaditos

In an episode of Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Khloé flew into town and began raving about cortaditos. A cortadito is a Cuban-style espresso drink in which fresh espresso is sweetened as it is being pulled, followed by an equal amount of freshly steamed milk.

In the episode, Khloé makes Kim drive all over town looking for a Cuban coffee shop. Sara Vasquez, who co-owns International Bakery Cuban Dulceria in Miami said, “Ever since that show where Khloé Kardashian got a cortadito, we’ve had clients asking if we have them.” They’ve even had a customer who drove all the way from Texas to try the strong drink.

Pippa Loves Sushi

They call it the “Pippa Effect.” Whenever Kate Middleton’s younger sister Pippa desires something, everyone else follows suit. In 2011, word got out that Pippa Middleton enjoyed eating sushi, as did tennis player Andy Murray, who enjoys up to 50 pieces at a time.

Because of Pippa, sushi sales in the United Kingdom have gone up 21 percent within a year. The British supermarket Tesco, which sells a wide range of ready-to-eat items, noticed that their pre-prepared sushi had begun to outsell typical go-to British snack fare, such as sandwiches with cheese, pickles, and salad. As if the Middleton’s weren’t already influential enough, it wouldn’t be the first time someone in their family had made something popular.

The Dukan Diet

Kate Middleton and her mother, Carole, have been known to be following the Dukan Diet. Developed by French nutrition specialist, Dr. Pierre Dukan, the diet is supposedly the secret to what keeps French women so infamously thin. In addition to the Middletons, Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bündchen have been rumored to try it too.

The diet consists of limiting yourself strictly to proteins and later, slowly incorporating some veggies here and there. After losing weight, you can begin to incorporate carbs and dairy back into your diet, but Dukan’s book goes into further detail about how exactly to execute this plan.

Carrie And Her Cupcakes

In the midst of the year 2012, it seemed as if cupcake bakeries seemed to pop up out of nowhere, sprouting in cities all over America by the dozens. What started this trend for the popular treat? People point to Sex and the City, where in one episode, Carrie Bradshaw and her girlfriends all dug into the delicious cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

All of a sudden, cupcakes became the trendiest treat in America. Since then, cupcakes have become entirely their own industry, with successful cupcake shops in major cities opening multiple locations and grossing over $11 million in a year in 2012.

Vita Coco started selling their coconut water in 2004, but it wasn’t until 2013 that they made profits of over $270 million. With celebrity investors like Demi Moore and Madonna, Vita Coco has flown off the shelves. The increase in popularity can be attributed to other celebrities like Anna Paquin and Chris Pine, who claim to love the stuff.

The Baby Food Diet

Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson is credited with starting The Baby Food Diet, which consists of eating up to 14 jars of wet baby food a day, in place of regular meals. Many stars have tried the diet, including Lady Gaga, Cheryl Cole, Reese Witherspoon, and even Jennifer Aniston. After word of the infamous diet became popular, sales of wet and dry baby food have greatly increased and people weren’t buying them for their babies.

Baby food jars can contain anywhere from 20 to 100 calories, so that’s why restricting your diet to these little jars is rumored to help weight loss. However, many doctors and nutritionists have criticized the diet, saying that it can cause nutritional imbalances for full-grown adults.

Going Gluten Free

You’ve probably already had your ear chewed off by health nuts who urge you that going gluten free does wonders for your body. Omitting gluten has been recommended for people who have Celiac Disease, but people whose immune system still reacts well to gluten have still tried the diet. Some of the people who have done so include Jenny McCarthy, who thinks that it has contributed to her son’s autism, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who blames gluten for her holiday weight.

Gullible Grapefruits

In the past several celebrities, including singer Kylie Minogue and actress Brooke Shields, have sworn by The Grapefruit Diet. This diet trend consists of eating grapefruits to burn fat — without having to do any exercise. There was some validity to the diet craze, as grapefruits contain a fat-burning chemical called naringenin.

Grapefruit Bite

While scientists have confirmed the presence of naringenin in grapefruits, the namesake diet has since been debunked in recent years. According to studies, someone would have to consume 40 grapefruits at once for the fat-burning chemical to take effect. At that point, any health benefits would be pointless because 40 grapefruits equals 5,000 calories and one kilogram of sugar.

The Taco Trend You Can’t Deny

Jack in the Box commercials always advertise their burgers, but seldom do you ever see an advertisement for their tacos. Still, Jack in the Box manages to sell 554 million tacos a year — that’s 1,055 tacos a minute, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deep fried goods have been labeled as a “wet envelope of cat food” and people who eat them know they’re “disgusting,” but can’t stop.

The tacos consist of a corn tortilla with a “meat” mixture center (it’s not actually meat), deep fried and complemented with lettuce, a slice of cheese, and taco sauce. The tacos are probably the cheapest item on the menu, which explains some of the appeal, but they are desired by people of all classes. Selena Gomez even got a cake made of Jack in the Box tacos for her 21st birthday.

Burgers So Good They’ll Make You Sing

British singer Jessie J gained a lot of popularity for serenading her meal from Shake Shack and afterwards posting a collage of her about to bite in to one of their burgers with the caption, “Just how it’s gotta be! #shakeshack #burger.” Shake Shack makes what Jessie J claims is the “best burger ever,” and the popular burgers have become such a hit, people compare them to the west coast’s In-N-Out.

People Eating Paleo Style

By now you’ve probably heard of people going on paleo diets, but what exactly is it? The term paleo refers to “paleolithic,” which is the era of the early stone age. People on this diet are pretty much eating like cavemen. This means that they can eat grass-fed meats, fish, fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs, and pretty much the other types of foods that were accessible to early cavemen.

A lot of celebrities have back this diet, such as Jack Osbourne, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2012. Other stars champion the paleo diet for its health benefits, such as Jessica Biel, Gwyneth Paltrow, Megan Fox, and LeBron James.
