Starting a family can be one of the most exciting and frightening things any couple can decide to do. While conceiving a child sounds like the most natural biological process known to man, there are many people who struggle to become pregnant. You should always seek the advice of your doctor when it comes to your ability to have children, but there are also some more strange unconventional non-medical methods you can try. Are you willing to see if any of these weird fertility tricks work for you?
Find your balance with Feng Shui
Have you ever tried the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui? Feng Shui is all about the flow of energy and balance and it claims to be able to help with just about anything. From increasing productivity and prosperity to helping a couple conceive. Maybe exploring ways to make your life more harmonious and balanced with Feng Shui could help!
All About the Zen
Feng Shui advises that you ‘look for blockages’ that could be preventing energy from flowing freely around the home. To promote fertility, you should also be strategically
Throw your Panties on your Roof
The Congo’s Yansi people perform a customary practice and toss their underwear onto their roof during a waning moon. Yes, this is a thing! This method is meant toboost fertility and chances of conception. This practice even gets a bit stranger if you can believe it! You can only retrieve your underwear on a new moon.
Chuck those Panties!
While this may be accepted as the norm in parts of Africa, we don’t yet foresee couples chucking their underwear on to their roofs in America. Could you imagine the sight of people throwing their underwear on their roof or just seeing random pairs of underwear on the roof of your neighbor’s home? Hey, maybe you have already seen it and now you know why it is there!
How About a Drink of Baboon Urine?
So here is another very, very unusual method out of Africa and obviously, most people would never consider this option. Well, it depends on how desperate you are! But some tribes in Zimbabwe concoct an unpleasantly potent cocktail of baboon urine and beer to help couples conceive. You are probably wondering, how they could even keep it down?
Pass on the Urine
The thought process around this disgusting concoction is that the hormonal content of the urine boosts fertility. It is hard to say if there is any science to back this up (perhaps scientists don’t even want to test it!) but it could only a matter of time until this option is rolled out in your local pub.
Put Some Egg White Down….There.
This may be difficult to imagine but, bear with us. Multiple sources swear that inserting a raw egg white into and around your privates before “love time” can help a couple get pregnant. “Why in the world would this be a thing?” you may be wondering. Well, the answer actually has some logic behind it.
So the thought is that the egg will act as a lubricant and mimic the ideal environment for conception. And apparently, this method only has any chance of working if you correctly separate the white from the yolk. Plus, if you accidentally use some of the yolk, you could end up with an unpleasant infection.
There are several different “wives’ tales” out there to boost fertility and this is definitely one of them. One woman who tried this method said it worked for her so maybe it is worth trying, and it honestly doesn’t take much effort so why not!? All you have to do is keep your socks on during the act.
A Little Caffeine Won’t Hurt
Experts say there still needs to be more research done to confirm whether it’s safe or not for pregnant women to consume caffeine. Doctors will tell their patients that if they really want to have that cup of joe, they should make sure to limit themselves to no more than 200 milligrams a day.
However, when you’re trying to get pregnant, they say it’s ok to drink caffeine, around 200-300 mg per day. The average 8 oz cup of coffee contains about 95 mg of caffeine. So while you don’t need to completely rid of it, you should limit your intake to no more than three cups a day.
Keep those Feet Warm!
While this simple solution to conception is very unlikely to be the answer to many peoples’ fertility problems, the logic behind why this method could work is just plain simple: poor circulation can impede fertility and this applies to both men and women.Covered feet are warmer and this helps the blood to flow.
Have a Water Fight
This strange technique actually sounds kind of fun, especially during the summer! But this is a method that occurs annually in Holloko, Hungary. Women flock to the streets in traditional Hungarian dress to have water thrown on to them in order to cleanse them and bestow the gift of fertility.
This Isn’t About Water Balloons
Now this could be both a boost to fertility and a fun surprise for your partner! You could potentially turn this Hungarian tradition into a fun game if you catch your partner unexpectedly. This water fight actually doesn’t sound like a bad idea; if you are stressed out about your efforts not working, it sounds like this could also be a good way to blow off some steam.
Straddle a Gigantic Model
Have you ever wanted to go to Japan? Maybe your international travel plans didn’t include this but maybe they should! Japan’s Festival of the Steel Phallus attracts thousands of visitors every spring and there is one main reason why people go: they are there to celebrate fertility and male genitalia.
You can also choose to sit on a large model phallic object and pray to conceive a child at this festival. So if you need some inspiration or you have any strong desire to purchase “member” memorabilia, you should get your passport, pack a bag, jump on a plane and head to Japan!
Kiss a Six-foot Ceramic in Greece
If it’s not a giant “member” in Japan, it’s a large ceramic “member” in Greece. Along the same manner as Japan’s joyous Steeled Phallus festival, Greece has an Annual Phallus Festival held in Tyrnavos. After hearing about both festivals, who wouldn’t want to celebrate fertility and male genitalia in places like Japan or Greece?
At the Annual Phallus Festival held in Tyrnavos, attendees are urged to kiss a six-foot ceramic “members” for fertility good luck. But unfortunately, the Greek orthodox church disapproves of all the genitalia-themed merriment and this may be impossible to find. However, tourists can attend and eat themed-shaped bread. This has also been cited as a method to increase their chances of conceiving.
Eat Some pineapple
While pineapple is delicious and all, this sounds like another wives’ tale. But according to some people who have tried it, they claim thatpineapple can aid conception. Pineapple is rich in an anti-inflammatory enzyme called bromelain, and bromelain can help embryos implant into the uterine lining. This sounds like more than a wives’ tale now!
For best results, you are advised to eat some pineapple for five days following ovulation. This may or may not work for everyone, but at least there is some science behind it, and there really is no harm in eating pineapple. Plus, another interesting fact is that pineapple has the opposite effect on overdue pregnant women. For them, it is meant to bring on labor. No harm in trying it out!
Cut Back on Long-Distance Runs
Do you enjoy exercising? Exercise is always a good thing no matter how you look at it but when you think about it, exercise is like anything else: If you overdo it, you’re going to burn out your engine. So it is actually recommended that women trying to conceive cut back on rigorous exercise.
There was a large Danish study in 2012 that found that normal-weight women who didvigorous workouts for at least five hours a week experienced a delay getting pregnant. This finding does make some sense because when women work out too much, they can actually lose their menstrual cycle. If you are trying to get pregnant and enjoy exercising, just make sure you aren’t overdoing it!
Skip the Spicy Tuna Rolls
There are so many people who love sushi and other types of fish like swordfish, mackerel, and shark but your love of seafood may be hindering your ability to get pregnant. Ocean-dwellers at the top of the food chain tend to have high levels of mercury contamination so you should avoid those large fish and potentially avoid sushi.
It is true that fish has always been considered to be a very healthy option for people but women typically don’t think about the risks of mercury. The accumulation of mercury in the bloodstream over time has been associated with infertility. If you are concerned about your level of mercury, you should get tested and avoid fish!
Eat a Big Breakfast
You have probably heard people say breakfast is the most important meal of the say but did you know it could actually improve a woman’s fertility? Strangely enough, there was a 2013 study published inClinical Sciencefound that eating a hearty morning meal may improve fertility for some women who experience polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Breakfast is the Best Meal of the Day After All!
The Israeli researchers who held this study recruited 60 women withpolycystic ovary syndrome, which is a condition that interferes with the development and release eggs. The women were divided into two groups: The “breakfast group” had a little more than half their daily calories at breakfast, and the “dinner group” consumed half their daily calories at dinner. After three months, the “breakfast group” had a much higher rate of ovulation and reproduction. Interesting and strange!
Be More Adventurous in Bed
There are a few different myths floating around about sexual position and how this may help with conceiving a child but there’s no scientific evidence to support it. A good rule of thumb is to go ahead and try whatever positions feel right. The more comfortable you are, the more you relax and then you will probably want to do it more often without the pressure of if it results in a baby or not.
Have Fun with It!
The best time to have sex for conceiving is during your fertile window—the five days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation. And out of all the days in that window, the last two to three days offer your greatest odds of getting pregnant. Some women have used ovulation tests to help nail down these dates, as well.
Change your Lubricant
People may not realize that some popular brands of lubricants could impede your efforts to get pregnant. How? Well, physicians have stated that certain components of water-based lubricants can make it more difficult for sperm to travel to the cervical canal. If you need to use a lubricant, you should consider other lubricant options.
What are the Ingredients?
But guess what? There are some lubricants that support conception and would be better for you to use! One great option is pre-seed, a product designed to mimic natural fluids for couples works really great for couples who are trying to conceive. Or if you prefer a more natural lube, try mineral oil.
Sleep in Total Darkness
Or in other words, disconnect! Humans are exposed to so much artificial light at night—like the glow from your iPad or TV screen—and this can mess with your ability to sleep. This artificial light can also interfere with yourability to conceive because lack of sleep hinders fertility.
Lights out…All Lights, That Is
The conclusion is that melatonin—which comes with good sleep—also happens to play a key role in protecting a woman’s eggs, especially during ovulation. If you don’t sleep well, you won’t conceive well. Even turning on a bathroom light could impact melatonin levels! You should make sure you receive eight hours of pitch black sleep a night!
The Gravity Method
The gravity method is another one of those classic wives’ tales and it must be a favorite because it is a very popular method! The gravity method is pretty basic: if you put your rear end up on something, putting your legs over your head, you are more likely to be successful at conceiving.
When is the Last Time you Did a Head Stand?
Some women take it as far as doing a head-stand immediately following sex but this just sounds somewhat painful and is ridiculous looking. In reality, there is no data to support this idea that elevating your uterus at a higher angle will help the sperm go into the vaginal canal. Sperm are smarter than you think – they will find their way!
Pray to a Fertility God
This option is definitely open to interpretation because you are free to believe in whatever you want to believe in. But there are lots of options for fertility gods, ranging from St. Gerard, the Catholic Patron Saint of Motherhood to Kokopelli, the Native American fertility deity. There is also Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of fertility, to Aditi, the Hindu goddess of fertility.
Pray a little
Prayer can be a good way to center yourself and align your thoughts. Struggling to conceive and infertility can be incredibly painful and difficult to experience. It can take its toll on even the strongest relationships so if you want to worship a fertility god, you go right ahead! Prayer doesn’t hurt you or your ability to conceive.
Spoonful of Syrup
A spoonful of syrup makes the medicine go down, right? Well, it appears that downing a teaspoon of cough syrup every day for a week before ovulation can thin out a woman’s cervical mucus. Why is this important? Apparently, this will make it easier for the sperm to find and fertilize an egg.
Take your Medicine!
Another strange option to try is drinking one teaspoon of 100 percent Grade B maple syrup and one teaspoon of 100 percent cocoa powder. You have to take a shot of this syrup sludge mixed in a cup of coffee first thing after waking up in the morning for two to three months for it to increase fertility.
Counting on Crystals
While some people want to pray to the fertility gods, there are some who want to leave it up to their crystals. Crystals are used as spiritual energy sources to aid the conception process. If you place some crystals on your uterus, ovaries, thighs, and the center of your pubic bone, it is said the natural energy will enhance fertility.
So using crystals or stones may be pretty strange and far-fetched for some to try but at least this option isn’t harmful or dangerous. If you want to try using fertility crystals, just make sure you get the right ones! For all of you earth goddesses, try using crystals like rose quartz, moss agate, carnelian, garnet, and smoky quartz!
And this is not just any typical type of bath! Hungarian mineral baths are believed to help with healing. These mineral waters flow underground and are said to soothe arthritis and even help fertility. If you want to try this avenue, just be prepared. You have to stomach a rotten-egg sulfuric smell, and lukewarm, yellowish water.
Get in, the Water is Nice!
There is also another bathing method in the form of steaming your genitals. Chai-yok, or a vaginal steam bath, delivers a steam that can penetrate the gynecologic regions and increase fertility. There are fourteen different herbs that are seeped like tea, and a woman has to sit on a stool with an opening so the steam can…work. Sounds a little painful to be honest!
