What Is Pansexuality?
Pansexuality has invented its own fluid movement in recent years of open love and affection toward every gender imaginable and although it sounds oddly similar to the concept behind bisexuality, it is quite different. Bisexuality embraces only the two genders male and female, but pansexuality embraces female, male, transgender, agender, bisexual and whatever else we have the freedom to be: the true inner love identification. Some of these listed celebrities may not come as a surprise, but some might….
As one of the most outspoken artists of all time, Lady Gaga’s face was used to break down the barriers to gender-blind love in 2010 with Out On Campus’s Milk-inspired Got Queer? campaign. Although Gaga was recently, heterosexually tied to ex-fiance Taylor Kinney, she still identifies herself as one that doesn’t see gender when seeking love.
Clearly a voice in the LGBTQ community, Gaga delivered an emotional and inspirational speech at the site of the Pulse nightclub just a few months ago that established her unconditional love for those that seek the company of their fellow gender. With such an open mind and open heart, there are no limits for Gaga’s love interest.
That’s right, the queen of pop has publicly come out as pansexual. As no surprise with such an interesting love story history involving women, men and everything in between, Madonna does not see anything but a soul when she looks for love.
As she ventures on the journey to make pansexuality a more “mainstream” concept, Madonna has and always will have the full support of the LBGQT community as a “gay icon.” From her innocent but sensual kiss with Britney Spears to dating females in the past like Jenny Shimizu and Ingrid Cazares, Madonna has always been open about her color and gender-blind tolerance and heart.
Billie Joe Armstrong
Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong came out publicly as bisexual in 1995, however, as the years have gone by Billie’s heart and mind have evolved even further to pansexuality. In his youth, Billie Joe married wife Adrienne Armstrong and had two kids with the sister of professional skateboarder Steve Nesser.
While still wedded to the grunge rock beauty, Armstrong came clean with the world that he was attracted to other men and formally came out at bisexual a year later. Now, Billie does not identify with being straight, homosexual or bisexual and loves all walks of life; especially his wife.
Actress Shailene Woodley is among those that consider themselves gender-blind when it comes to love. Lately, the Divergent stunner has been tied to boyfriend Nahko Bear, a free-loving and free-thinking musician that has much of the same ideals as Woodley. Recently involved in the Standing Rock situation, the two activists have been pledging their freedom to those that still remain on the Native American site together.
Shailene has been quoted by saying she “falls in love with human beings based on who they are, not what they do or what sex they are.” Although there are no signs that the young actress has been with a girl, it is clear that she is open to the idea.
Despite her long romance with now ex-husband Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie has only one label: pansexual. As a woman that only finds beauty in living, breathing things, Jolie is open to all walks of life and has been very open to the press about it. Much like Bille, Jolie originally identified as bisexual with female relationships under her belt like Jenny Shimizu.
At just 20 years old, Jolie fell head-over-heels for the beautiful fashion designer and was reportedly the more masculine one in the relationship. But, as she has grown, experienced life, children, love and health scares, her mind is quite clear about the concept of love and everyone counts. Although it is tempting to speculate who Angelina’s next great love will be, only time will tell what or whom her gender-blind heart will bring her.
15-year-old transgender TLC personality Jazz Jennings is functioning as an active and progressive youthful face for pansexuality, so far. Considering Jazz has still yet to find love at such a young age, she claims that she is attracted to boys, but there is a possibility for her to be attracted to females as well.
With such an open mind, she already knows that it will be the emotional connection she finds attractive about women, although she has yet to encounter these feelings personally. As an author, transgender and up-and-coming celebrity at just 15, the Being Jazz: My Life As a (Transgender) Teen writer looks for inner love rather than in outward appearance.
21-year-old daughter of actor Alec Baldwin, Ireland, has embraced who she is a living, breathing person and found complete, head-over-heels solace in agender, 25-year-old rapper ex-girlfriend Angel Haze. As a youthful, interracial and pansexual couple, these two were really turning heads in Hollywood.
After a day-long breakup in February, the two resumed their public and aggressively prideful relationship for 10 months before their eventual split. Before Haze, Baldwin was tied to ex-boyfriend and professional stand-up paddler Slater Trout, but clearly Trout was not enough to fulfill Ireland’s colorful and vast pallet. As Baldwin is back on the male train currently with new beau Noah Schweizer, there is no telling where her heart will end up.
There is a clear pattern of what Angel Haze finds acceptable after a rough Christian upbringing and among the list of these particulars lies how strongly she feels as a pansexual. In interviews, the 25-year-old rapper even goes as far as being referred to as “they and their” to relay her passion behind lacking labels of gender.
As an outward pan in both her private life and in the press, Haze has been very clear about the key to her androgynous heart: make her laugh. And, apparently, Ireland did just that as she seemed to have captivated the boundary-less talent’s heart ten fold. Will Haze be able to fill the space that Baldwin left? Only time will tell, but for now, the studio is the only thing that has Angel’s attention.
Finally, the poster child of pansexuality: Miley Cyrus. Claiming anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to love her, it was Cyrus that acted as the initial catalyst for the formal rejection revolution of gender. Bursting with fluidity, sexuality, and empowerment, Cyrus has influenced many to find themselves without gender roles, openly and honestly.
Although she has been quite vulgar about her movement at times, her heart rests in the right place believing in the equality and freedom behind pansexuality. Currently linked back with ex-fiance Helmsworth and seemingly slowing down after her crazy, single year, Cyrus appears to be settling down. It will be interesting to see what happens with her and Liam, but in the mean time, she is still seen as the original face of being pan.
It should come as no surprise that musician and performer Kesha falls along the lines of pansexuality, although she has not come out and said it yet. With racy lyrics, videos and a wild personality, Kesha Rose Sebert told Seventeen magazine in 2013 ““I love people. It’s not about a gender. It’s just about the spirit that exudes from that other person you’re with.”
Granted Kesha could end up identifying with bisexuality, that is different than being pan, but the likelihood of her mind being open to all walks of life is pretty decent; we think. It is even harder to say since the singer/ songwriter has been wrapped up in her famous battle with music producer Dr. Luke for the last year.
Lily Rose Depp
Yes, you saw the last name correctly: Depp. As in Johnny Depp’s daughter with model Vanessa Paradis, classified her sexuality as pan in 2015. Last year the up-and-coming actress and model, gliding through her predestined fame on both the screen and runway, came out as sexually fluid.
Depp posed for the Self Evident Project, an organization that is said to help adolescents “understand their emotions and identities” during the trials and challenges that arise with growth amidst confusion. Currently seen with model boyfriend Ash Stymest, Lily Rose appears to be all smiles with her man just a year after coming out as fluid, so who knows which side of the sexual spectrum she will end up on.
As one of the big named catalysts of the pansexual movement, actress Kristen Stewart looks to the future when sexuality isn’t bothered to be questioned upon. Granted with the paparazzi existing that may never happen, but Hollywood stars can dream, can’t they?
After a wild relationship with ex-boyfriend and Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson, the always androgynous actress set her sights on the opposite end of the spectrum. Dating assistant Alicia Cargile for what seemed to be awhile, Stewart came out about the relationship in her own sweet time. Now linked to Cara’s previous beau St. Vincent, Stewart seems to be leaning towards women in recent years.
As the very first openly pansexual legislator, brave Democratic representative Mary González is working hard to break down barriers in Texas with “familial bonds,” according to Huffington Post. Immediately following her election in 2012, González came out publicly as pansexual and made it known that she had dated transgender and “gender-queer” people in the past.
Apparently, the media confused her coming out for being lesbian at first to which the representative set the record straight, saying that it was a “more complicated history” than the way they portrayed it to be. Although González is constantly combating prejudices within her career, she feels that her openness about and experience with gender fluidity has the potential to decrease some of these injustices gradually.
With absolutely no need to call herself anything and free reign to let you call her whatever you please, Natasha Negovanlis, Canadian actress and model, finds the struggle of labeling based on sexuality to be a waste of time. She claims to have never identified herself as straight, queer, bisexual or anything that might rest in between as she has engaged in relationships with all walks of life.
Playing the “female curious” and seductive role of hellion vampire Carmilla Karnstein on YouTube web series Carmilla, Natasha has the full support of the LGBT community on her side; whether she wants it or not.
The new way to say pansexual is “sexually fluid” according to serious babe and hearing impaired America’s Next Top Model contest Nyle Dimarco. With eyes you could drown in, a jaw that could cut glass and bone structure carefully concocted by the gods themselves, Nyle is a free man.
Free from the labels of sexuality and free from the negativity and hate that is constantly pouring all over our eardrums when it comes to society-encouraged stamps of approval. Someone this insanely beautiful deserves to be free though, which means he is free game for men and women. Lucky us!
As one of the front woman in the movement of being “pan,” famous supermodel Cara Delevingne considers beauty to be an all-inclusive matter. After a year-and-a-half whirlwind romance with female musician St. Vincent, Annie Clark, Delevingne’s partying tendencies with co-stars Margot Robbie and Amber Heard got in the way of their future together.
Sadly, Vincent moved on quickly to actress Kristen Stewart and Cara has not been seen with anyone since Clark, but to be fair she was busy dominating her role as a cursed antihero enchantress in the killer film Suicide Squad. With both males and females tied to the supermodel’s past, the possibilities are endless.
Caitlin Jean Stasey
Stunning Melbourne actress Caitilin Jean Stasey is quite open about her unbiased perception of gender and how it relates to her love life. Last year the talented actress revealed to the world on her blog Herself that she was also gay, although she was tied to boyfriend Lucas Neff. She exclaimed that she always knew that she was “mostly” gay but claimed to happier as “fluid and honest” in an open relationship with Neff.
In addition to being outwardly fluid, Stasey offers her support as a pro-choice activist at an Australian clinic that performs abortions, by escorting the young women from their cars. Now, as Stasey stars in Reign, her powerful work in the Free the Nipple movement and revolutionary voice are catching the attention of the world.
Pansexual, Parisian lead singer of Christine and the Queens, Héloïse Letissier sought inspiration in the lonely London streets in search of a label to call her own. Once coming across a drag queen club called Madame Jojo’s and a trio of vibrant individuals that had clearly found themselves, Letissier experienced an epiphany.
Inspired by the celebration of openness and sexual transformation, the young, lost student decided to be a singer and performer for all walks of life and is now one of the most famous musicians in Europe. Known to only wear pant suits, Letissier is a face, a voice and a soul of sexual reformation.
Young wallflower Ezra Miller is currently in pursuit of an identity that falls between queer and straight, seeing as how he has dated both sides of the spectrum. Preferred to be classified outside of the typical, society-based binary system we have so abruptly conformed to, Ezra was immediately and falsely labeled as gay after “coming out” in an interview in 2012.
Often confused as a female in his younger years, Miller has always embraced fashion in a simultaneously virile and effeminate sense that fits his “all-encompassing banner” of the word queer, as opposed to “gay.” As he so beautifully stated in an interview with Gay Star News, “There should be an ongoing question and investigation of who you love and everything that’s involved with that very tricky and beautiful thing.”
As an active advocate for sexual freedom, Lebanese-British pop star Mika has no need to label himself but likes to think of himself as a role model for gay youth. With the heavy and understated belief that you “should be as free as you want,” Mika encourages those that struggle to identify themselves between and beneath the exponential challenges that arise in a “gay” lifestyle.
With a loose outlook on the pressures of labels, Mika’s has never limited himself when it comes to whom he wants to sleep with and inspires others to do the same through his music and his passion for life.
