There are so many ways to approach the new year in a healthy way and make it so much better than 2016. With steps toward self-growth, appreciation for others, a little organization and natural communication, this could be your best year yet! Don’t miss out on these life-changing tips….
Prioritize Real Life Over Social Media
This is a huge one and is getting more important as the years go on. Technology basically captivates every moment of our attention at this point, but it causes us to miss out on important things in life. With our heads buried in our phones and computers, our entire world revolves around the quality of our wifi and it can be scary sometimes.
Dedicate this year to being more in the moment, taking in beautiful scenery, enjoying great times with friends and family and try to put your phone away. We know it won’t be easy, but the freedom you will feel once you are “unchained” from your device will seriously blow your mind.
Take on New Responsibilities
Whether it’s at work, home or with friends that you may have bailed on in the past, use this year as an excuse to make some major changes. Take on a heavier work load or make it apparent that you are willing to take on more at work.
Through gaining more responsibility, your productivity and positivity will skyrocket and you will realize your full potential is just the tip of the iceberg! Be sure to take on what you can handle, however; we don’t want to exhaust or overwhelm anyone. Remember, you have all year to work up to this so take your time and attain what you are comfortable with.
Create a Yearly Review
The very first step that we should take when approaching any new year is a thorough reflection on our past accomplishments, failures, struggles and experiences. How did we feel about the amount of knowledge we attained over the last year, or the way we treated people? Were we good, better or worse with our money? Do we feel that we made any progress compared to the previous year? Are we happy with the way we ended it?
These are important questions to immerse ourselves in before we are inevitably back up at bat. This tool works in two ways: first to comprehend which areas in our lives we can improve on and second to celebrate and understand what positive strides we made that worked for us. It’s always nice to give yourself a pat on the back, right?! And, it’s helpful to assess where things didn’t go well, too. (Sorry, Mariah!)
Finish Your Projects
There is nothing like an unfinished project to hang over your head, right? After taking a mental or even written-out inventory of your past year, add to the list your home or work projects that you never got around to or finished.
Whether it’s repainting your bathroom, creating a DIY masterpiece beer barrel shelf, cleaning out or the gutters or simply just hanging up a family picture, you will feel great when you complete it. By erasing the lingering incomplete chores from your list, you will be able to enter 2017 with a clear head ready for new and more fun projects.
Set Realistic Goals for the Year
This is always a standard, but it is vital to set both long-term and short-term goals for the new year. By having a list of potential issues you want to tackle and wipe clean, you will approach the coming months mentally prepared and ready for obstacles that may arise in the future.
These goals can be as simple as getting a new litter box for your cat or huge ones like finishing school or going back to school for a graduate degree. We must remind you that it is important to be realistic when setting these goals for yourself as to not overwhelm or over complicate the situation before it even arrives.
Focus on What You Really Want
Sometimes it is hard to decide on what we want or what we should want, so this is the perfect opportunity to sit down and really think about it. Do you want a healthy relationship? To be single? To gain a better and closer relationship with your parents?
Whatever it is, sit down, think about it, and write it down. It is always more effective to physically see goals so we are constantly reminded of what our hearts are truly set on. A good idea would be to post these somewhere around your room, some people would call these dream boards, to enforce how to accomplish your dreams on a realistic scale.
Work on Being More Flexible
As we get older we become more set in our ways whether we realize it or not. It becomes more difficult to comprehend and appreciate change, especially to see when it could be healthy for us. Our suggestion is to simply keep an open mind for the year.
Yes, 365 days to keep your eyes, mind, and heart open sounds like quite an exhausting feat. However, just try to imagine how many more opportunities the flexible mind set could bring you. When we are less likely to say no, negative patterns can be re-tooled and the brain will adapt to the healthier, more positive perspective.
Reorganize Life through Your Living Space
Feng shui is no joke. It doesn’t matter if you live in a grand mansion or a shoe box, changing up the familiar scenery in your room really does make you feel better.
Less clutter means more organization and having an organized place that you are proud to call home will help to develop a better sense of space, positivity, and productivity. The art of feng shui is utilized for a better sense of self and to make an improvement in the overall flow of the energy in the room. And what better way to start off the new year than with some new energy?
Make New, Healthy Friendships
One of the most exhausting portions of our lives is creating lasting friendships with those that are not worthy and working to make sense of the relationship, right? Why not start from scratch, drop the people that don’t deserve you and find ones that will make you a priority.
Leaving dead weight behind in 2016 will give you a fresh perspective of respect and values that will align with your future goals and make it easier for you attain them. We always want to surround ourselves with the best people possible, and unfortunately, it’s not the easiest thing to do.
Use Positive Language as Much as Possible
It is true that if you physically smile more, you obtain a more positive outlook and almost trick your brain into thinking you are happy. The same goes with the way you speak. By avoiding negative and unnecessary language that could hurt those around you, we will build a better appearance and attract more positive people.
This could go as far as body language as well. In other words, you are constantly communicating, positively or negatively, to the outside world without even saying a word. Want to communicate happiness and help attain success? Employ proper posture, don’t use obscene gestures, and keeping your head held high. In order to improve every inch of your sense of self, you must achieve positivity on both mental and physical levels.
Choose a Personal Flaw To Work On
One of our favorite things to do at the start of a new year is to choose one specific thing that we want to work on and dedicate the rest of the year to better that particular flaw.
Say for instance you were the type of person that talks over people without meaning to; you would obviously take time to listen as opposed to thinking of the next comment you’re going to respond with. Although it may just seem like you’re focusing on one thing when there may be many to fix, you have potential to be the greatest listener of anyone you know by 2018! What flaw will you choose?
Mentor Someone Or Find a Mentor
Whether you are looking to gain or share wisdom, one great idea to start off the new year is to share your gift, whatever it may be, with someone else or learn about someone else’s.
What better way could you think to spend the year than educating a young individual based on the personal struggles you have experienced and bettering their lives? Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America are great programs that could potentially change and save lives. If you are looking for a mentor, look to your loved ones or someone that is skilled in a particular craft you are interested in executing.
Increase Physical and Mental Awareness
When it comes to awareness this year, you can work on getting up to speed on both mental and physical levels. That means being aware of your surroundings when you’re walking to your car late at night, embracing the warm feel of sunshine on your back during your lunch break outside, and feeling confident in the person that you are.
Of course, this is easier said than done, which is why this is a good tip to work on during the year. Rather than spending time on Instagram taking pictures of food, you can be mindful of experiencing the intoxicating aromas and flavors in the moment. By being more in touch with your inner self through the appreciation of the moment, you might be better equipped to find happiness in 2017.
The typical new years resolution that we always hear is to eat healthier, but most of the time it is weight-related concerns that drive this goal. Rather than trying to lose weight, this year you can choose to make it about fueling your body with healthy substances so you feel better, healthier, lighter, and more positive.
One of our favorite tips to put this into a better perspective is to think before you eat something, is this going to serve or hurt my body? If it’s a donut covered in sprinkles that looks irresistible, we won’t judge but chances are that won’t help you. It is truly incredible what a change of diet can do to a person mentally and physically.
Make a Commitment To Fitness
Just as the right food can serve our body, so can the right types of exercise. But, when we say exercise we mean consistently, not just the first week of the year.
So often we see the gyms flooded with new years resolution visitors that don’t actually have a wholesomely healthy mindset and lifestyle in mind; this is what we mean by committing to fitness. Either enjoying a run a few times a week during the sunset, hiring a personal trainer, or just dragging yourself to the treadmill every other day will jump start your motivation to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Enjoy Personal Time
One of the greatest and hardest facets of our lives is being comfortable when we’re completely alone, but there really is hidden beauty in the silence of solitude. When you are able to sit alone, be present in the moment and really reflect on all of the pieces of your life with confidence, you will feel at peace.
Sometimes it is scary to spend time alone, especially for those just getting out of a relationship, but it truly represents personal growth and strength. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed with friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, family, whomever, take a minute to just sit and breathe.
Find a New Hobby
Feel annoyed when people tell you to find a new hobby because it sounds so generic? Well, hopefully this will change your mind. Finding a new passion can piece together parts of your personality you never even knew existed, bring you to meet new people and experience different things of which you’re not normally familiar; who wouldn’t love that?
Hobbies are a great form of release through channeling a zest for life in something unexpected and even at times scary. But, who knows? This year you could pick up the guitar and by 2018 you could be the next Jimi Hendrix. Never limit yourself.
Write Something Inspiring
Or just write something. It’s a great idea to reflect on experiences with writing; it can be a very therapeutic form of self-expression. By documenting times where you were proud of your self-growth or even times that you felt you could have held your composure more, writing is a great outlet. It may even surprise you how refreshed you feel after putting the pen to paper or typing away on your laptop.
Make this the year that you start your life story to share with others! And for those that write for pleasure in general, get to that short story that you never finished. Or even read that book you have always wanted to, there’s no better time than the present.
Enjoy Live Music More
As one of the most beautiful and mind-altering experiences in life, music can make everything better. Whether you are having a hard day and a great song comes on your phone or you’re just tired before a run and need to wake up, music is the ultimate catalyst.
And there is nothing like experiencing it live! Treat yourself to seeing one of your favorite bands for some of the greatest memories you will ever make. Another interesting tip is to immerse yourself in the live experience without the presence of your phone. Yes, you may not be able to view the epic solos later but you were present and lived it instead.
Do Instead of Dream
Although we are huge fans of having dreams and they are vital to succeeding in life, we prefer to do rather than just dream. If you have been thinking about visiting a country for years, just do it. Or even something simple like trying a new restaurant!
The sky is the limit this year and you have nothing holding you back from doing rather than dreaming. As the most important step of all of our suggestions, making something happening is so much more fulfilling than dreaming, hoping and wishing that it will happen. Make it happen. Do it, don’t dream it.
