Look. Childbirth is painful, no matter how you swing it. An average-sized newborn making its way through a mother’s narrow birth canal is a miracle on its own. But can you imagine giving birth to a baby twice the average size — and without any painkillers?!
It seems impossible, but it happened to one woman in Australia earlier this year. Natashia Corrigan of Melbourne gave birth to her third child, Brian Junior Liddle, three months ago without an epidural. “Junior” tipped the scales at an incredible 13 pounds and 4 oz, measuring 57 centimeters long. With an average newborn size of 7 pounds in Australia, he may be one of the biggest babies ever born in the country.
Even more impressive than the baby’s size, however, is the mom’s supreme chillness about the whole ordeal.
“I dreamed of a little fat baby,” she told local news stations after the healthy birth. “I’ve always wanted a little fat baby and I’ve got a big one!”
That’s putting it mildly. Corrigan already knew before going into labor that she was going to have quite the big boy. At the 36-week prenatal checkup, Brian Junior already weighed an estimated 9lbs.
“I never dreamed he’d be this big,” Natashia later admitted on social media, “I thought he’d be an 11 pounder at the max! But we were blessed with a safe delivery of a 13.5 pounder! I’m still in shock!!”
Brian Junior was born at 40 weeks and five days, after a seven-hour labor at Mercy Hospital. His two older sisters were considerably more average when they were born, weighing 8lbs, 4oz and 7lbs, 12oz, respectively.
“It was a bit scary,” said proud dad Brian of the birth of their son. “But now everyone’s fine. Mum’s fine, the baby’s fine.”
How did she do it? “The power of positive thinking during birth, be positive, breathe deep,” Corrigan said.
But more than that, she credits the incredible support she got from her partner and the hospital staff during labor for helping to ensure a smooth delivery. “They kept me strong and calm when it seemed like chaos was happening around me,” she said. “Because he was so big, it was a bit hard to get him out, and they had to get a few extra staff members to come in and help.” No kidding!
“I think I was in a bit of shock because the birth was natural and I only had gas so I was still in a bit of shock just from that,” she continued. “This is the first pregnancy I’ve got to experience with a natural labor, the longest I’ve ever been pregnant and I’ve got the fat little man that I wanted!”
For his part, “little” Brian Junior seems to be enjoying his time in the limelight.
“It’s hard to get our minds around such a whirlwind of a day,” Natashia said on Facebook. “I never dreamed we’d get so much love for our BIG baby boy and family.”
