Most women dream of walking down the aisle on their wedding day. This action is supposed to be part of the age-old tradition that comes along with getting married. However, for one woman, the aspiration of performing this act, that so many take for granted, proved to be more difficult than she could imagine. Jaquie Goncher, a 25-year-old bride-to-be, realized the complexity involved for her when planning to walk down the aisle on her wedding day. Unfortunately, Goncher has been paralyzed from the neck down since she was 17 years old.

A swimming accident that Goncher suffered in her teens amounted to a spinal cord injury and the notion that she may never walk again. Ever since the injury, Goncher has used a wheelchair for transportation in her daily life. However, as her wedding day approached, she decided about one year prior to her special day that she would make sure she could walk again.

Goncher went back to the gym to attempt to get her legs back in shape. Her first experience on a stationary bike was very trying, since her legs were unable to push the bike hard enough to keep the apparatus going. The bike constantly shut down on her. The experience, in fact, was so upsetting to her she found herself crying in the gym.

Since Goncher had been an active athlete before her accident, she found the initial gym experience to be very disheartening. However, she was determined not to give up on herself, no matter how daunting the task ahead of her appeared.

All brides want to be beautiful in front of their loved ones on their wedding day, and Goncher was no different. Although she felt women in wheelchairs can still be gorgeous when going down the aisle, she was tired of her wheelchair defining her life.

Goncher had such difficulty in fact, when she first started to try walking, that she could not be on her feet for more than 30 minutes at a time. This problem was, in part, due to her injury, and also due to her low blood pressure.

When Goncher began walking down the aisle on her wedding day with her mom and grandfather, she initially entered in her wheelchair. The appearance of her in the wheelchair, accompanied by her mom and grandfather, surprised none of her onlookers. After all, seeing Goncher in her wheelchair was, by then, a normal sight for all that knew her.

However, Goncher still had a shocker in store for her audience. Her guests were stunned when she stopped her wheelchair, got up and out of it, and started walking down the aisle. Andy Goncher, her groom, waiting at the other end of the aisle, was so moved by her hard work and efforts to achieve this moment, he started crying.

After Andy Goncher’s tears had begun to fall, the rest of the crowd witnessing the wedding was so moved, the entire room was brought to tears. In fact, Goncher was able to stand up throughout the entire 45-minute wedding ceremony.
