We all have a love-hate relationship with McDonald’s, don’t we? Of course, we know that the fast food giant and its extensive menu of greasy burgers and fries only contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle, but at the same time, it’s just so convenient. There are tons of locations and so many are open 24 hours. You can’t beat a quick, tasty meal when everything else is closed. And let’s be honest. Sometimes we all just crave those delicious, salty fries.
Truth, Or Rumors?
We’ve heard all the rumors about what happens behind the scenes at McDonald’s and all the not-so-kosher things that go into creating the fast food we all indulge in. Are these rumors true? Click on to read about all the shocking McDonald’s facts, interesting stats, and behind-the-counter happenings.
McDonald’s Employs 13% Of The Population
Do you know anyone who has been employed by McDonald’s? I’m sure you do and it makes sense that you would because the huge fast-food empire has employed one out of every eight Americans at one time or another. There is a high turnover rate, but they hire about one million applicants every year.
Demanding Fresh Food won’t Work
If you thought that asking for a freshly made patty would do the trick, it won’t. A former employee admitted that when customers ask for that all they really get is a dried up patty dipped in grease to give the illusion of it looking fresh. The image above should paint the picture better for you.
It’s All In The Advertising
McDonald’s spends unbelievable amounts of money on advertising. In fact, they spend more on their advertising campaigns than any other restaurant chain in America. In 2013, McDonald’s advertising budget was $2 billion, which was more than the other top four fast food chains’ budgets combined. And it pays off. Everyone knows McDonald’s.
Just like when you ask for a freshly made burger, the same thing goes for when you ask for fries with no salt or asking for freshly made fries. This is because the employees hate this request. All that will happen is you will receive old fries that have been dunked in the oil for about 15 seconds or so.
McDonald’s sells an incredible volume of food every day. The drive thru’s are almost never empty. In fact, the chain sells 75 hamburgers every second. And that’s because nearly 68 million people eat there every single day around the world. That’s an unbelievable number, isn’t it?
If you are under the impression that the salads are healthy and low calorie at Ronald McDonald’s House of Grease, think again. Their salads can run over 400 calories after adding dressing, croutons, and crispy chicken. That’s more than a cheeseburger! Now, of course, there are healthier options including yogurt, better drink choices, and always remember to swap crispy, fried chicken for grilled.
Watch out for the Lettuce
One confession from an employee is one that is tough to swallow. He was threatened to be fired and the reasoning behind it is ludicrous. All he did was refuse to use lettuce that expired ten days prior! He says the color of it was brown and knew that he couldn’t be fired for that, at least legally.
The Queen’s Burger Joint
Okay guys, get this. We all know that people all around the world love McDonald’s but did you know that the Queen does also? That’s right. Queen Elizabeth likes the Happy Meal makers so much that when she purchased a retail area right outside her Windsor Castle window in 2008, she decided to put a McDonald’s there. Now, she can get her fix whenever she wants!
Meat. It’s What’s For Dinner.
McDonald’s serves billions of pounds of meat every year. They are, in fact, leaders in the industry when it comes to purchasing beef and pork. And that’s not all. The chain also purchases more produce like tomatoes, lettuce, apples, and potatoes than any other restaurant in the U.S.
Seven Years Toil
I’m sure we all assume that the company’s head honchos are making quite a bit of dough doing their jobs to keep McDonald’s as the number one fast food chain in the world. And we are correct in that assumption. The CEO currently makes $9,247 an hour. According to Nerd Wallet, it would take the average McDonald’s worker earning minimum wage seven months to make that amount.
Did you think Gloves Protected?
The gloves do not mean that your food is sanitary. In fact, it could be worse for you. An employee said he has seen cooks wearing the gloves scratch places he prefers not to state and get right back to working with the food. He has also seen them go into the bathroom with the gloves and not take them off!
Don’t Try and Beat the Buzzer
Do not order breakfast at the last moment. If breakfast ends at 11 and you order a breakfast meal at 10:59 then prepare to have your food dug out of the waste tray. Extra food gets thrown in a special trash that is for the use of expired foods. That is where they dig it out of.
We’ve all heard the rumors about how McDonald’s creates their Chicken McNuggets. It has been reported that the meat, including bones and “extra” pieces, are put through a process where they are mixed together becoming “mechanically separated.” After this process, the slime is flavored, breaded, and cooked. McDonald’s has said that they only use USDA-inspected white meat chicken and not the process described above. Though, according to a former employee, all white meat chicken shouldn’t liquefy completely if a bag of frozen, uncooked nuggets are left out on the counter.
Ingesting preservatives isn’t something we enjoy thinking about. Especially when we find out that the same preservatives that are used to keep McD’s fries and burgers looking fresh are the same ones that are also to thank for keeping them looking appetizing after more than a few months. This photo is of a 14-year-old burger with no mold, however, you will see that the pickle disintegrated.
Those golden arches are one of the top most recognizable icons in America. Everyone from your great grandfather to your two-year-old niece knows what that symbol means. It has even been said that more people recognize the McDonald’s arches than the Christian cross. There is only one place in the world, though, where those golden arches are not golden. In Paris, France, the McDonald’s arches are actually white.
Don’t. Drop. That. Patty!
Not only do you have to worry about getting spit in your food, but you have worry if your cook has butter fingers! Another confession from a former employee is that spit is the least of your worries because the employees throw the food on the ground, stomp on it and even more.
Keep your Voice Down
Another thing you should not do is raise your voice if you don’t want to be ridiculed afterward. An employee said you will get made fun of as soon as you drive away. And once you start to yell, they stop caring about giving you a good customer service experience.
Unique Menu Options
We know what to expect on our friendly, neighborhood McDonald’s menu, however, in other countries, McDonald’s menus are all a little different. It makes sense as the fast food giant needs to cater to their customers’ cultures and tastes. For example, in Japan, the menu includes shrimp options and in Germany McDonald’s even sells beer.
High off Life
Another crazy thing an employee admitted to was that he has seen co-workers do drugs – while on the clock! Not when they get off, but in the bathrooms! He said he once walked in and seen coke lines lined up on the sink counter about to be snorted by co-workers.
Now this is a tasty tidbit. Have you ever heard of cellulose? Cellulose is a type of additive that is a combination of wood pulp and plant fibers. McDonald’s uses an extensive amount of this additive in their foods, including in the ice cream, various sauces, cheese, biscuits, filet patties, sausage and scrambled egg mix, and smoothies.
Have you ever looked at the Chicken McNugget and thought, I wonder how they get their shape? Well, wonder no more. Every Chicken McNugget is specifically shaped into one of four shapes known as the bell, the ball, the boot, and the bow tie. So now every time you order them, you’ll have to inspect them to find out which shapes you have.
One McRib Please
Sly employees often pull a fast one without you knowing. If it is busy and orders need to be met in a timely manner then sometimes the cooks just grab a burger patty and coat them with a heavy amount of sauce. You probably have had this happen to you and don’t even know it.
McDonald’s restaurants in India are the only ones in the world where beef is not an option. It makes sense, right? Instead of the Big Mac, customers can order a Maharaja Mac which is an all lamb or chicken burger. And in Thailand, children can choose a pork burger for their Happy Meals instead of beef.
Movin’ On Up
McDonald’s has come a long way since its first restaurant opened. Not only has the franchise grown exponentially and continues to change and reinvent the brand, but the menu is much different than it used to be. The original restaurant served barbecued pork, ham, and beef, chili, tamales, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Can’t Escape The Calories
If you’re dieting, it’d be a good idea to stay away from this breakfast item. The McDonald’s Big Breakfast with Hotcakes and Large Size Biscuit is the most calorie-laden item on the whole menu. Now get ready for this. It has an incredible 1,150 calories, 60 grams of fat with 20 grams being saturated fat, and 2,260 grams of sodium.
Coke Really Tastes Different There
A lot of people claim that the Coke that’s served at McDonald’s tastes different than Coke you can purchase anywhere else. Well, the company recently verified this fact in a statement on their website. McDonald’s uses stringent guidelines to how their beverages are stored, mixed, and served. The result is a taste that’s always consistently refreshing.
McDonald’s has seen its fair share of lawsuits over the years, but a recent one regarding its restrooms might just top them all. A New York man had to use his neighborhood McDonald’s for all his bathroom needs during a water dispute in his home for a year. In the lawsuit against the water company responsible, lawyers stated that using Mickey D’s facilities was “inhuman suffering”.
The Most Hated Bathrooms In America?
Wow, people really have beef with the bathrooms in McDonald’s. In August 2017, a man was arrested after he set off a bomb in a Florida McD’s restroom. The suspect, 35-year-old Jason David, was seen hastily leaving the bathroom right before the explosion tore through the restaurant. Luckily no one was injured.
Yep, you read that right. We’ve read that McDonald’s locations around the world have very different offerings. In 2017, Japanese McDonald’s restaurants began offering cheese smoothies. While that might not sound terribly appealing at first, the smoothies are made with mascarpone cheese, which is actually a pretty standard ingredient in lots of Italian desserts like tiramisu. McD’s treats also contain berries.
A Healthy Move?
Although McDonald’s has been incorporating healthier choices into their menus, the chain made an announcement recently that contradicted those efforts. At the end of 2017 McDonald’s will begin serving a beverage that’s only 42% juice in its Honest Kids’ meals, instead of the 100% juice it currenly provides. In their favor, the new juice contains much less sugar.
If you’ve been disappointed by the amount of toppings McDonald’s serves on its McFlurries, you might be excited about this hack. Apparently, in some McDonald’s you can order extra sauce on your frozen treat for a minimal fee and will be rewarded handsomely with lots of the tasty goop.
That Is, If The Machine Is Working
People have frequently griped that the McFlurry machines always seem to be out of order. In an interview with PopSugar, some McDonald’s employees candidly admitted this to be true. One of them explained that “two things could be going on; one, it is just “broken” because they don’t want to deal with it slowing down their times or their cleaning timer is set around that time for whatever reason. Option two is their franchise and the owner is too cheap to get it fixed properly.”
Is that.. Spit!?
Believe it or not, your food really does get spit on! This means you have to be kind to the person taking your order, do not provoke them in any way. This goes double for the drive thru! All it takes is one command from the person taking your order to the cook and you got a spit Quarter Pounder.
Coffee Is Hot, People
Can you believe that people are still suing McDonald’s for coffee that’s “too hot”? The original lawsuit against the chain’s coffee temps was settled in 1994, but people are still at it. The latest suit comes from Carl Honeycutt, 57, who claims that a selfie he released to the public proves that a McDonald’s employee scalded him with too-hot coffee. The verdict is still out on this one.
Preying On The Kids
For those of you who have kids, do they ask you to go to McDonald’s often? According to the research, 40% of children ages two to 11 ask their parents to bring them to McDonald’s at least once a week. Now, perhaps these parents need to shield their impressionable, young children from the greasy, deliciousness. Kids are smart, though, and they know what tastes good.
Believe it or not, McDonald’s does everything it can to prepare their management to handle the intense customer load, super fast service, and sheer volume of meals sold. The fast food chain has done that by opening McDonald’s University, an educational and training facility. It was opened in 1961 and has had about 80,000 graduate the program. The first facility to ever be opened is in Chicago, Illinois.
A Ronald Education
Any Ronald McDonald fan will be thrilled to learn that there’s a documentary out about the eighth man to play the kinda creepy clown. Titled ‘Ronald,’ the film tells the story of Joe Maggard. Maggard was the eighth person to be the restaurant’s official mascot. (Don’t forget, Willard Scott was the first!)
More Toys Than Toys R Us
This is a pretty incredible fact, but McDonald’s is actually the world’s largest toy distributor. This puts the company higher than Walmart and even Toys R Us. McD’s is also the largest private provider of children’s playgrounds which is a great thing to be involved in.
The Round Egg
There is a certain way to make sure that the egg on your breakfast sandwich is fresh from the carton. The trick is to order a “round egg” because if you don’t then your egg comes from a powder mix. The round eggs are freshly cooked in a round ring, which is why they’re called “round eggs”.
Get It Skinny
There is a way to save your hard earned cash and watch your calories when ordering the McFlurry. What you do is order your McFlurry but ask for it in a kiddie cone. There are 420 calories and 58 grams of sugar in a snack size McFlurry whereas the kiddie cone has 215 calories and 38 grams of sugar. On the next page, you’ll find out another effective hack!
The Cheaper Big Mac
It’s around four dollars for a regular Big Mac by itself. When you can get a whole meal for that much, why pay so much for a single burger when you get it cheaper? All you have to do is order a McDouble ($1.39) with no ketchup, no mustard and add in Mac sauce with shredded lettuce. You’d only be missing the middle bun.
How To Be A Weight Watcher
We know McDonald’s is necessarily thought of to be the healthiest destination to eat but if you need it to be, it can be. “Every so often when I have a long drive and can’t pack food or snacks, Mcdonald’s is where I go,” registered dietitian Toby Amidor say. “I order a kid’s meal comprised of a hamburger, small order of fries, a bottle of water and a Cuties clementine. This meal has just 390 calories.”
Not As Healthy As You Thought
The yogurt parfait sounds like the ultimate healthy choice when ordering from McDonald’s because it has the fruit, yogurt and granola. Those are all foods that are associated with good health. The problem with this McDonald’s menu item is that it is packed with 22 grams of sugar so it’s nothing more than a calcium enriched sugar dish.
Well Worth The Weight
Since the burgers come with predetermined toppings, the best way to get a fresh burger is to ask for your burger to be made without a topping. They don’t just open the burger and take off the topping, they will make you a fresh patty. And the “difference between a burger that’s sitting for who knows how long and one right off the grill is phenomenal,” a former employee said. You just might have to wait a little longer.
Is That Real Rib?
Sadly, the McRib is not a real rib. Sorry to break the news to your folks like that but it’s just pork formed into rib shape by a mold. There’s a reason that this sandwich is so popular. The bun is made with sugar, the pork is soaked in salt and the sauce is pure high fructose corn syrup. Does it sound appetizing now?
Fear The Chicken
In 2015, McDonald’s customers were warned to steer clear of anything with grilled chicken. that includes salads and the sandwiches because, “it’s horrible frozen chicken that we defrost and steam, and it’s a bit gelatinous,” said a former manager. Good thing there are other options if you’re attempting to be healthy. Do you like the Shamrock shake? Click next and find out about that!
Shake Or Corn Syrup?
Many love when the Shamrock shake comes back around but many shouldn’t love it because it is extremely detrimental to your health. These nostalgia shakes might be screaming your name but the truth is they’re made of 99% high fructose Corn Syrup. Blended in with the syrup is vanilla reduced-fat ice cream.
Special Services At Special Times
Photo by: Jeff Greenberg/UIG via Getty Images
A former employee noted that “during certain hours, there are customers who’ve been paid to have a meal and rate their experience.” This usually happens between 12 and two P.M. five and seven P.M. Employees need to be wary for these customers because they are instructed to give their best service.
Pie Eating Contest
Being one of the last customers in the diner at night could be a benefit for you if you love the pies. There’s a good chance that you could receive a free pie or maybe two because whatever is left over gets collected once the store closes and employees have pie-eating contests.
Employees Get Creative
When no one is looking, employees become the chefs they always wanted to be. They let their creative juices flow and start to create their own secret menu items such as the McSurf-and-Turf. Another being the double quarter pounder but with one patty replaced with a Filet-O-Fish patty.
Trick The System
When you work for McDonald’s you aren’t allowed to win the Monopoly game. However, employees perform a workaround by checking the thrown away containers and cups. If they happen to win free food like breakfast, they will take it to another store to claim their prize. Anything for a free meal.
Beware Of The Cheese
If you have ever wondered why sometimes the cheese you are eating is dried out and hard, an employee reveals why this is so. “The cheese used on food is out in the air for sometimes days, as long as it hasn’t got to the point of making people ill, we are supposed to use it,” said the employee.
Is The Ice Cream Machine Really Out?
You know how often the ice cream machine is “out of order” at any McDonald’s? The answer to that is too often but according to the same employee who just warned us about the cheese, the machines might still be working. She was asked if employees lie about the machines being down and her response was “sometimes yeah, sometimes we just can’t be bothered, or we have run out of mix.”
No Real Secret Menu
At other huge burger fast food chains like In-N-Out there is such thing as a secret menu. At McDonald’s, however, it really doesn’t exist. “Only off menu stuff is just changes to current items like add cheese or stuff like that,” said the former employee. “Best one we got was a guy who ordered a chicken sandwich, without the sauce, chicken or bun and with cucumber and tomato, so basically a salad.”
A Squeaky Clean Secret
Someone wanted to know if a lot of unsanitary things happened behind the scenes in the kitchen. Customers can rest assured that this is not the case. “No not really, we are really clean and the entire place gets washed down every night,” said the former employee. “And my favorite job is probably taking out the [trash].”
What’s With The Messed Up Orders?
Are you tired of getting messed up orders? Your frustration is universal when you get your burger expecting it to have no onions but all the onions are right there. Why is this so? “Honestly, some of my co-workers do that because they don’t pay attention,” said one employee. “There’s a subtle difference between the add menu and the remove menu.”
Ask And You Shall Receive
There used to be a golden time when you could ask for as many sauces as you liked with your nuggets. Things changed and customers started to get charged for these sauces and for what? Luckily, employees say that all you have to do is ask nicely and you shall be blessed with sauces at no extra cost. Just as long as you don’t ask for too many. Wait until you see this forgotten gem on the next page!
What Happened To That Pizza?
Do you remember when McDonald’s had a small pizza you could order with fries and a drink? They were taken off the menu but some people were curious as to why and asked employees. “They have an idea they run the numbers for a limited time offer to test the waters if it works they keep it,” said the employee. It looks like it didn’t work.
No More Disney
Do you remember seeing Disney character toys in your Happy Meals as a child? They were great, right? Sadly, that’s all over. In 2006, Disney decided to stop partnering with McDonald’s saying that they want to be seen as family friendly and wish to distance themselves from the fast food market, instead, trying to promote healthier lifestyles.
