In February of 2016, Ellen heard of the plight of Spain Elementary-Middle School. Located in the inner city of Detroit, Michigan, Spain Elementary-Middle School was in dire need of help. Many of the students there are poor or homeless. This was not their only obstacle, though. The school itself was in major need of repairs, with the roof falling down, and the gym was shut down forcing students to take P.E. in the hallways. There is also no heat in the school and the students wear coats inside.
