Everyone Is Here For What Emma Stone Yelled During The 2019 Golden Globes

On the night of Jan. 6, 2019, the annual Golden Globe awards took place, and it was a historic night. Sandra Oh made history three times at the 2019 ceremony, and each for distinct reasons. The Grey’s Anatomy alum became the first person of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes.

The second on her list from the fantastic night is that Oh is the first woman of Asian descent to win multiple Golden Globes. Back in 2006, she won her first Golden Globe for her role as Cristina Yang. After she won on Jan. 6 for Killing Eve, she became the first woman of Asian descent to take home multiple awards. This achievement set up how she made history for the third time.

The next and final success was a long time in the making. Oh became the first woman of Asian descent in 39 years to secure a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama.

These accomplishments are all well worth the praise and applause that Oh received and will get from her peers. However, one of the exciting moments from the night happened during Oh’s gig as the host. The Killing Eve winner made a joke that Crazy Rich Asians was the first studio film with an Asian American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha. To which Emma Stone could be heard deep in the crowd yelling “I’m sorry!”

Stone had been accused of “whitewashing” after getting cast for the part of Allison Ng, a character of Chinese and Hawaiian descent. “It wasn’t like I planned it, but I did say it,” Stone said. She didn’t plan it, but people appreciate that she did that.

“I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is,” Stone reportedly said. “It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important.”
