Career Beginnings

Angelina Jolie made her screen debut as a child alongside her father Jon Voight in the 1982 film Lookin’ to Get Out. In the early 1990s, she was cast in the low-budget production of Cyborg 2 (1993). Before doing Cyborg, Jolie had also acted in five student films for the USC School of Cinema, all directed by her brother, James Haven.

Although she worked with her family, she had a dysfunctional relationship with her father. She resented him for leaving the family before she was even one year old. Jolie decided to drop “Voight” from her name, and use her middle name, “Jolie” as she started her career in acting.
