Jolie’s most prominent role during the early years of her career was as Kate “Acid Burn” Libby in her first Hollywood picture, Hackers (1995). Her next film was 1996 comedy Love Is All There Is, a modern-day loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set among two rival Italian family restaurant owners in the Bronx, New York.

Several of the casting directors during her auditions told Jolie that her demeanor was “too dark” and that she needed to adjust in order to be cast in roles. She received some harsh reviews for her performances in the late ’90s. Even being described as a “horrid.. fourth-rate Scarlett O’Hara” by Philadelphia Inquirer writer Robert Strauss.
