In the 1920s and 1930s, an explosion of self-made black culture began in Harlem, New York City, dubbed the Harlem Renaissance.

The renaissance included music and dance, but it also created some uniquely black hairstyles. Josephine Baker has a well known slicked-down pixie cut, and Billie Holiday made putting flowers in your hair acceptable.
