Foxcatcher depicts John du Pont’s murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz. While what appears on screen is accurate, the filmmakers took lots of liberties with the timeline along with the characters’ relationships. This is especially true considering viewers don’t see how much time passes between Dave joining Team Foxcatcher and his death.
The movie depicted du Pont quick apprehension by the police after the murder, but what really happened was that the millionaire hid in his mansion’s bomb shelter-like vault in a multi-day standoff. And since the movie makes it look like Dave’s brother, Mark, quit wrestling completely after leaving the team, really he was coaching at Brigham Young University before his brother was killed.
The fact that James Hunt and Niki Lauda were never rivals didn’t stop Ron Howard from saying so in Rush.
