Tobe Hooper’s low-budget Texas Chainsaw Massacre may have been advertised as a true story, but it’s far from being all true. Leatherface is one of the many iconic horror movie villains, he really didn’t get his sadistic mind from a real-life chainsaw-wielding maniac.

Much like Norman Bates in Psycho and other bad guys, Leatherface was loosely based on the real-life serial killer Ed Gein. He confessed to killing two women and was known for exhuming corpses from graveyards. While those type of actions influenced the creation of Leatherface, that’s about it when it comes to being a true story.
