The Pursuit Of Happyness, adapted from Chris Gardner’s rags-to-riches story is real, but it stretches the truth on a few points. For one thing, Gardner’s internship with Dean Witter wasn’t unpaid. In reality, Gardner received a $1,000 a month stipend during the 10 months he worked with them.

Gardner never went broke by selling defunct bone density scanners, although he was a salesman for medical supplies. His arrest was given the Hollywood treatment, as he didn’t come straight from jail to his job interview as it was depicted in the movie.
