In The Fighter, Mickey Ward is shown living up to the world champion status thanks to a successful bout with Shea Neary, while his boxing brother Dickie succumbed to a drug addiction. However, boxing aficionados note that the fight only won him the World Boxing Union junior welterweight title in 2000.

The portrayal of the Ward sisters was also a point of controversy. Alice Eklund, the real-life sister to Mickey, told Men’s Journal that she took umbrage to the film’s portrayal of her family. The film depicted them as nothing true to who they were, which made one of the sisters leave the screening of the film early.
