American Sniper pulled in many award nominations for its depiction of Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper, and his life as a United States Navy Seal. However, along with all the love came a ton of controversy over what was true in the film.

Kyle’s portrayal in the movie highlights things like the fact that he has the most confirmed kills in United States military history, but there were plenty of moments from the film that differed significantly from Kyle’s memoir. The main antagonist in the movie is Mustafa, the enemy sniper that Kyle is in battle with. In real life, Mustafa appears or only one paragraph. Also, Kyle’s long-range shot wasn’t targeting Mustafa, but another soldier carrying a rocket launcher over 2,000 yards away.
