Ron Howard is one of the great directors of this generation, and his work with the 2005 biopic Cinderella Man was just another notch on his belt. While he did an admirable job telling the story of James J. Braddock, a heavyweight champion who conquered his greatest foe in Max Baer, he could have done a better job telling Baer’s side of the story.

Baer is painted in a negative light throughout the film, and boasts about putting his opponents in their grave. In reality, the death of Frankie Campbell had a tremendous effect on his life. He would raise money for Campbell’s widow and son, and Baer’s own son remembers him as a good-hearted, warm human being who hated boxing.
