Matthew McConaughey played the part of Ron Woodroof, a Texan rider who competed in rodeos who was diagnosed with AIDS in the early ’80s. At the time, that would be nearly impossible to treat, and Woodroof smuggled experimental drugs into Texas to try and combat the disease.

Woodroof wasn’t actually a competitive rider, and he wasn’t the homophobe and misogynist he was painted as before his diagnosis. Also, two of the main characters, Eve Saks and Rayon (played by Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto), didn’t play any real role in Woodroof’s life. The weirder part is that there were people, like Woodroof’s sister and daughter, that did play a significant role in real life that was ignored in the movie.
