Movies That Were ‘Based On A True Story’, But Apparently, That Was A Lie
Hidalgo

Hidalgo/Touchstone Pictures/Carey Silver Productions
The 2004 film Hidalgo tells the inspiring story of Frank T. Hopkins as he competes in a grueling endurance horse race through the Arabian Desert. The incredible tale was taken directly from the autobiography of the real Frank T. Hopkins, who wasn’t shy about giving a colorful account of his life. Throughout his book, Hopkins details his countless victories, his friendships with historical figures, and his triumphant victory in the Ocean of Fire with Hidalgo. There was a catch though — none of it ever happened.
Basha and CuChullaine O’Reilly, equestrian historians, used historical records to debunk all of Hopkins’ assertions. In the end, Hopkins was nothing but a fraud.
