The epic war film 300 is a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae within the Persian Wars. King Leonidas leads 300 Spartans into battle against the Persian King Xerxes in a fabulous showcase of might, will, guts, and glory. But while the movie is based on real events, filmmaker Zack Snyder took lots of liberties when drafting the thrilling story.

Many details of the film have been questioned, including the incredible size of Xerxes and the somewhat “nice” temperature of the Spartans. When asked about the changes, Synder said, “I didn’t want to render Sparta in overly accurate terms, because ultimately I do want you to root for the Spartans. I couldn’t show them being quite as cruel as they were. I made them as cruel as I thought a modern audience could stand.”
