The Australian film Wolf Creek follows three backpackers hunted by a serial killer in the outback. The hit horror is effective at scaring the audience, but not telling the actual story. Selling itself as based on true events, the film is inspired by two similar cases from 1999.

The case that inspired the film the most was likely that of Peter Falconio and Joanne Leese. During their backwoods encounter, Lees was tied up while Falconio was murdered by a mechanic around Barrow Creek. Lees escaped her captor and was able to get the killer arrested and sentenced to 28 years in prison.
