While Moneyball was accurate, the film alters history at some points. In the film, Carlos Pena is the Oakland A’s first baseman on Opening Day until he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. In fact, Pena did start at first for the start of the season, but lost the role to Scott Hatteberg and played for the A’s AAA team when he was traded.

The book and the movie also ignored the pitching trio of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito, as well as infielder Miguel Tejada. Most importantly, Jonah Hill’s role of Peter Brand was based on Paul DePodesta wasn’t quite accurate. Feeling the character was becoming fictional, DePodesta requested his name not be used for the movie.
