The Strangers

The “Inspired By True Events” from the poster of The Strangers speculated to fans as to what true events might have occurred. Much of the attention was focused on the Keddie Cabin murders that took place in the California woods in 1981. There is, however, no evidence that this incident had any influence with writer/director Brian Bertino.
Bertino stated that one of his main inspirations for the story was Helter Skelter, the true-crime novel which chronicled Charles Manson’s murderous family. The real seed of the story came from Bertino’s youth. People in his neighborhood went door-to-door asking for somebody who didn’t live there. Those people were breaking into houses.
