Mel Gibson’s brilliant biopic of William Wallace, a freedom fighter who rallied his people against the evil English in the 13th century, had some truth, but also some exaggerated moments. Screenwriter Randall Wallace admitted to a few creative flourishes with regards to his screenplay.

He made up a fictional world on par with the life of Middle-Earth. Primae noctis? Never happened. The kilts? Nobody was wearing them in the 13th century. Isabelle of France never even met William Wallace in real life, so naturally, she couldn’t have been romantically involved with him.
