Penelope Spheeris is an American director best known for Decline of Western Civilization and Wayne’s World. She was offered the chance to direct This Is Spinal Tap, but declined because she didn’t want to make fun of rock music.

In an interview, she said, “At the time I had started getting into heavy metal. Like really started digging it, which, if you’re in the punk rock scene is a pretty big jump. I was really into a lot of the bands and really seriously listening to a lot of it all and enjoying it.
