In 2017 it was announced that Harry Shearer was suing Vivendi, the company that owns This Is Spinal Tap. Originally, Shearer filed suit for non-payment of royalties regarding merchandise as well the film’s soundtrack. Christopher Guest and Michael McKean have joined the suit, increasing the damages requested to $400 million.

Shearer has taken issue with a practice known as “Hollywood accounting.” He claims that Vivendi has been dishonest about the amount of money that the film has made over the years and that he and his co-stars have not received their fair share of royalties.
