Nia Vardalos wrote and starred in the independent romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002. It was a happy accident that the independent film became one of the most successful movies of all-time with a $368.7 million profit at the box office with just a five million dollar budget.

Vardalos based the movie on her own life growing up Greek and falling in love with someone outside her heritage. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedy Motion Picture.
