Before becoming his moniker Barney Fife, Don Knotts was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity at West Virginia University in 1946. Other notable members of Phi Sigma Kappa nationwide have included Eric Cantor, Robert Stivers, Robert Mondavi, Harry Steenbock, John F. Brock, Cheech Marin, Burl Ives, and Red Skelton.

Phi Sigma Kappa began on March 15, 1873 at Massachusetts Agricultural College in Amherst. The fraternity promotes three Cardinal Principles: “Promotion of Brotherhood,” the “Stimulation of Scholarship,” and the “Development of Character”. Based on the third principle alone, you can easily see why Knotts became a member.
