Don Knotts’ career is highly decorated. But, growing up, his family life was not all flowers and rainbows. He was born in July 21, 1924 in Morgantown, West Virginia. He and his three older brothers were raised by both parents who were farmers. Coming of age during the Great Depression, the family was considered “dirt poor” (like most people).

Knotts’ older brother Earl died of asthma in 1942, when Knotts was still a teenager. His father became a paranoid schizophrenic and alcoholic. Knotts would joke that he drove his father crazy. Talk about overcoming some family drama… Knotts deserves another award for resilience.
