Shocking Things You Never Knew About The Golden Girls
Nobody Could Beat Arthur Out For The Role
Bea Arthur wasn’t going to appear as Dorothy but the show’s producers knew they wanted a “Bea Arthur-esque” actress to play the part. After attempting to recruit the right female for the job, the famed actress agreed to take on the role and the rest, as they say, is history.

Iconic
Bea Arthur was already a well-known actress who successfully played strong women, so it’s no wonder producers sought her out for Dorothy’s role despite considering some other people.
During casting, the production team initially considered actress Lee Grant, from the earlier series Peyton Place. Elaine Stritch was also considered. Neither Grant nor Stritch got the part. Producers were looking for someone strong, who could be imposing at times, with a quick and sarcastic sense of humor. Bea Arthur had already proven herself in a similar role with her portrayal of Maude on the series of the same name. Although there was even a production memo stating that they wanted a “Bea Arthur-esque” actress for Dorothy’s part, it took the team a while to actually offer her the job. We’re so glad she took the part!
