Before the show first aired, the leading ladies were actually originally cast for different roles than the ones they ended up playing for many years. Betty White was originally supposed to be Blanche, and Rue was going to be Rose. They had agreed to switch, however, in order to ensure they were playing different roles than they were known for.

Blanche Devereaux and Rose Nylund were about as opposite as two good friends could be. Blanche was a sultry and bold seductress, with a sharp wit and quick sense of humor. She dressed in form-fitting and glamorous clothing, and was always looking out for her next romantic partner. Rose was just the opposite – a sweet farm girl from Minnesota who wore dowdy clothes and always seemed to be a few beats behind everyone else. Rue McClanahan played a perfect Blanche and Betty White was supreme in the role of Rose, so it’s difficult to imagine if the show would have done as well with the initial reverse casting.
