Arthur had a caring side and was actively involved in civic causes
Many fans might be surprised just how involved Arthur was in her charity work.
Not only was Bea Arthur outspoken about civil rights as Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls, but she also cared deeply about several humanitarian causes in her real life. In particular, she was concerned for the LGBTQ community, the elderly, and for Jewish rights. Although she’s been gone since 2009, Bea Arthur’s Residence for LGBTQ youth in crisis opened in February 2017, in New York City. The shelter has 18 beds to accommodate homeless LGBTQ youth. Even after her death, Arthur continues to help those who need her assistance the most.
