Ross is a lifelong animal lover whose second joy in life was rescuing wounded animals. Growing up in Orlando, Florida, Ross would often take in various injured animals, one time even nursing an alligator back to health in the family’s bathtub.

One of his most famous companions was Peapod the squirrel. Peapod was an epileptic squirrel that Ross nursed back to health. Peapod would hang out with Ross in the front pocket of his shirt while he painted.
