Alexander Ended Up Hating Him

Bill Alexander may have been Ross’s inspiration and teacher, but Alexander would notoriously end up being very bitter towards Ross. After the success of The Joy Of Painting, Alexander believed that he had been sold out and betrayed by Ross. In 1991, he told The New York Times that, “I invented ‘wet on wet’, I trained him, and … he thinks he can do it better.”
Ross paid tribute to Alexander in the premiere of the second season of The Joy Of Painting but apparently, that was not enough. Alexander even originated the phrases “you can do it”, “happy little trees” and “almighty brush” that Ross made famous.
