Ross was notoriously private during his lifetime. Throughout his life, he maintained a very small, tight-knit group of close friends. These friends have continued to maintain his privacy and interviews with them are only available with a $200 pledge to PBS. His company, Bob Ross Inc., has maintained his intellectual privacy over the years as well.

What is known about him is that he has three sons, Bob, Steven, and Morgan. Bob and Steven were born to his first wife, Lynda Brown, while Morgan was born to his second wife, Jane Ross.
