While in today’s world of late night television, making fun of politics is completely common and even expected. Back in the late 1980’s Johnny Carson had a major effect on one man’s presidential run. Gary Hart was running against Michael Dukakis for the democratic ticket back in 1987 but Gary later dropped out. His reason? An affair, of course.

He was pictured with a woman named Donna Rice on a boat trip which was published in the New York Post. Of course, Johnny and other late night hosts immediately made fun of the scandal. At the time, people said it was directly due to this unwanted publicity which led to his ousting from the run.
