Johnny Carson took to mocking the affair, particularly for the name of the boat Gary Hart and Donna Rice were photographed on – “Monkey Business”. Even a television critic named Greg Dawson quipped, “Isn’t it reassuring to know that the identity of the next president of the United States could be decided in large part by Johnny Carson’s joke writers? It this a great democracy or what?”

Of course, this was not the only political sex scandal that was joked about by late night comedians, and there were many for years to come. Little did we know that some thirty years later we would actually have a reality star as President that had publicly been maligned for affairs himself since the 1990’s.
