I Want To Make People Laugh
Born in New York City, Bill said he knew early on that his goal in life would be to get laughs. In fact, a report he wrote in seventh grade about what he wanted to be when he grew up started out by saying “I want to make people laugh.” After high school, Bill looked for a liberal arts college in which he could indulge his love of drawing cartoons, writing funny essays and radio scripts. He chose DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
He said he had no intention of staying and graduating, however. He was interested in a career in television, so he took courses that he thought would help him get started. When Bill’s cousin Ned told him of a new TV station that was starting up in Phoenix, Arizona, he knew it was time to make a leap of faith.
